Fire damages Keywell Building near Falconer...
A fire that started inside a dust-collection unit on the side of the Keywell building -- just outside Falconer -- triggered a smokey blaze early Thursday morning.  Chautauqua County emergency dispatchers say Falconer fire crews were called to the scene at 1873 Linden Blvd just before 6:30 a.m., and were joined by firefighters from Kennedy, Gerry, and, Kiantone... County EMS, Ellicott Police and Rescue 7 from Fluvanna.  The fire was declared out just after 8 a.m., and, no injuries were reported.  The cause is under investigation.

Langworthy announces Farm Bill "listing session" in Chautauqua County during chamber breakfast...
The House of Representatives returns to Washington right after Labor Day... and, a number of issues will need to be addressed heading into the Fall.  One is getting a new, five year Farm Bill in place.  This year... Chautauqua County will have a role in that process.  During the annual Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce's Congressional Breakfast Wednesday morning in Dunkirk... local Congressman Nick Langworthy announced that a Farm Bill 'listening session' will be held in Chautauqua County next Wed., Sept. 6 in the town of Portland at Cornell Cooperative Extension.  Langworthy says the meeting will run for two-hours... 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at extension's office on West Main Rd.  The Buffalo-area Republican... who is a member of the House Agriculture Committee... says the chairman of that committee... Glenn "GT" Thompson... will be on hand.  Thompson represents a large part of Northwestern Pennsylvania -- including Warren County -- which borders the state line.

Langworthy was in Chautauqua County for much of the day Wednesday... and, besides passing a new Farm Bill, Langworthy says Congress will have to deal with government spending, and that could lead to another crisis... namely a potential government shut-down.  He adds that inflation is the biggest issue he hears about from constituents in the 23rd District.  The chamber breakfast was held at Shorewood Country Club. 

Langworthy joins Chautauqua Lake stakeholder to talk funding and other issues...
Congressman Langworthy was also in Chautauqua County to meet with the many stakeholders in Chautauqua Lake about on-going efforts to maintain the lake.  Langworthy spent much of a just over one-hour meeting with leaders of those groups yesterday to see what they need and how he can help out.  The Buffalo-area Republican says it helps that he's in the House majority... and, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer is in the majority in that chamber... and, he says the New York Democrat has agreed to work with him on issues regarding the lake.  County Executive P.J. Wendel is looking for sustained funding for lake maintenance... with one proposal being instituting a boat user fee.  Wendel expressed his appreciation to Langworthy for his help in a relatively short period of time during his first-term.  Langworthy... who is a native of Cherry Creek... says the lake -- and it's condition -- is a "big deal" here.  Several entities were represented at the meeting... including the Chautauqua Lake Management and Watershed Alliance... Chautauqua Lake Association... and, the Chautauqua Lake Partnership.  Foundations were also represented... along with Chautauqua Institution. 

City woman arrested after allegedly throwing glass cup at male victim...
A Jamestown woman has been arrested following a domestic incident in which she threw a glass cup at a male victim... injuring him.  City police were called to an East Fifth St. home shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday for a "domestic dispute in progress."  Further investigation revealed that 31 year-old Toni Schnars had struck the man in the knee and ankle with the cup before fleeing the scene.  Officers was later found by a probation officer, and other offices from the first platoon.  Schnars was taken to the city jail without further incident... and, jailed pending arraignment on charges including third-degree assault... fourth-degree criminal michief...and, Aggravated Family Offense. The male victim suffered minor injuries from the incident.

Jamestown woman arrested for trespassing in Cherry St. Parking Ramp...
A city woman has been arrested for trespassing after she was allegedly found sitting in one of the stairwells of the Cherry Street Parking Ramp.  Jamesotwn police say a patrol officer was conducting an "area check" of the ramp at 15 West Fifth St. just after 9 a.m. Wednesday due to numerous trespass and criminal mischief complaints in recent months.  Officers say they found 36 year-old Lovella Kellom in the stairwell... but, she was not a customer of the ramp.  With that... she was issued an appearance ticket for city court on a trespassing charge.

Westfield Grape & Wine Festival set for this Saturday in Westfield...
Celebrating grapes and the harvest is not new to the Lake Erie grape belt in Chautauqua County.  But... there’s never been a festival in Westfield -- until this year.  General Manager of the Growers' Co-op in Westfield, Steve Cockram is also a member of the committee that’s put together the first-ever Grape and Wine Festival.  It’ll be this Saturday, Sept. 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at two locations: Moore Park in the center of Westfield, and the Grape Discovery Center just west of the village.  Admission is free.  There’ll be grape-themed events and fun activities at both locations.  Another of the organizers, Melissa Baideme, says at 2:30 Saturday afternoon, the ‘Blessing of the Grapes’ will take place at the Grape Discovery Center.  The festival will also mark the 10th anniversary of the Grape Discovery Center.  
 

City Council approves new "Quality of Life" ticketing ordinance...
The Jamestown City Council has unanimously approved a new, "Quality of Life" ticketing ordinance to "speed up" action on more minor housing and property issues.  Concerns were raised over how the new ordinance will be enforced... and, the safety of code enforcement officers.  Following the vote... Council President Tony Dolce noted that... while fines could be assessed... the idea is to get people to comply quicker.  Dolce says the Dept. of Development would rather work out issues with constituents to get those matters resolved.  He adds that lawmakers realize some issues will take more time... like finding someone to paint a house.  Housing Committee Chairwoman Marie Carrubba has talked about frustrated residents who have tried to work with neighbors to get issues resolved.  She hopes this encourages people to take care of their properties in "a timely manner."  While there's more work to be done... Carrubba says taking more minor offenses out of Housing Court will not only get action sooner... it also puts some teeth into the law.

Jamestown lawmakers also give final approval to SAFER Grant agreement with city firefighters union...
Final approval has now been given by city lawmakers to the agreement with the Jamestown firefighter's union to hire eight new firefighers.  Earlier this Summer... Council gave tentative approval to receiving a $1.8-million SAFER Grant to pay for the firefighers for the next three-years.  However... attorneys for all sides continued negotiating a final deal... and Council President Tony Dolce was pleased to be able to give final approval to the contract.  Dolce says it's a matter of safety, but, also "protecting the taxpayers."  Deputy Fire Chief Matt Coon was pleased to now be able to move ahead... recruit the eight new firefighters from the Civil Service list... and, get them trained.  He says letters will likely go out right after Labor Day.  The final agreement shores up the expectations of what may happen if the city is not able to financially keep all eight positions filled.  Those eight new firefighters would not count towards IMPACT payments to the union.

Pair of city men arrested for trespassing and drug possession...
Two Jamestown men have been arrested on trespassing and drug-related charges after they were found inside a condemned home on the city's northside last weekend.  Jamestown police were called to 129 Price St. shortly before 1 p.m. last Saturday... and, found the two men inside.  Officers say they identified the pair as 44 year-old Edwin Sanchez, and 27 year-old Eric Ramos-Astacio.  Police say Ramos-Astacio allegedly tried to conceal and destroy evidence by placing glassine envelopes in his socks, and then his mouth.  He was told several times to remove the items... and, put his hands behind his back -- but, refused.  He also pulled away from officers before he and Sanchez were both taken into custody.  They were taken to the city jail.. but, a further search found that Sanchez was in possession 12.4 grams of Cocaine located inside 23 separate capsules... and, Ramos Astacio was found to be in possession of .4 grams of Fentanyl.  He is charged with trespassing, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence and resisting arrest.  Sanchez is charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, trespassing.  Both were jailed pending arraignment.

Wendel to hold Fredonia water meeting, and work continues on new budget...
The village of Fredonia's water will be the focus of a meeting hosted by Chautauqua County Executive P.J. Wendel this week.  Wendel says a number of people have been invited to the meeting... because with a new hospital being proposed there, they'll need a reliable water supply.  He says members of his administration and health department will meet with the mayor, and water committee.  Village trustees recently approved a comprehensive study of the water system, which includes the option of purchasing water from the city of Dunkirk.  That study is due later this year.  Wendel says there are resources available to help the village, including federal and state funding for infrastructure projects.

Plenty of interior improvements being finished up at Jamestown's Fletcher Elementary School...
Except for some new sidewalks installed this summer... the exterior of Fletcher Elementary School on Cole Avenue in Jamestown looks much like it always has.  However... Principal Amanda Sischo says inside is another story where they're "replacing the guts of the building."  The ‘original’ part of the Fletcher building will get air conditioning for the first time.  In order to make the upgrades, ceilings have been removed in the basement... and on the 2nd floor to install vents, and new ‘data lines.’  Sischo says they've updated thier public address systems, cameras... and, internet systems.  She believes the contractors involved will have the building ‘buttoned up’ in time for school to start on Tues., Sept. 5. 

Sample stepping down as Station Mgr. at WRFA-LP FM...
Big changes will be coming in mid-September at Jamestown's low-power public radio station... as Station Manager Jason Sample steps down at WRFA-LP FM.  In a press release late Monday.. the Reg Lenna Center for The Arts announced that Sample would be stepping down on Thurs., Sept. 14 to pursue another opportunity in communications and public relations.  Jason began his radio career here at Media One Radio in the early 2000s... and, joined WRFA in 2008.  He became Public Affairs Director at the station in 2011.  He became Station Manager in March of 2021.  Current WRFA Public Affairs Director, Julia Ciesla-Hanley, has been named interim station General Manager.  

North county man seriously hurt after e-scooter is struck by car in Falconer...
A Dunkirk man riding an electric scooter in Falconer is being treated for serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle Sunday morning in the village's four-corners.  Ellicott Town Police were called to the scene at the intersection of East Main and North Work Streets about 10 a.m., and learned the scooter... operated by Michael Cox... was westbound on East Main... and, failed to yield at a red light.  The scooter was then struck by the southbound vehilcle, driven by Susan Williamson of Jamestown.  Cox was taken by Falconer rescue to the school where he was flown by medivac helicopter to UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa.  Police say the investigation is continuing.

Pair arrested on drug and other charges following traffic stop in Jamestown...
Two people have been arrested following a traffic stop late last week on the city of Jamestown's southside.  City police say their Violent Crime and K-9 Units stopped the car... driven by 19 year-old Damion Dalton of Jamestown... shortly before 1:30 a.m. last Friday at Newland Ave. and Colfax St. for alleged violations.  They found that Dalton was wanted on confirmed City Court warrants... and, that he was driving with a suspended license.  During the investigation... officers searched the vehicle and found a quantity of methamphetamine... Psilocybin Mushrooms and a digital scale.  Police found the drugs belonged to the passenger... 43 year-old Andrea Whitford-Rogers of Sarasota, Florida.  She was charged with Felony fourth-degree criminal possession of a Controlled Substance... and, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, criminally using drug paraphernalia.  Dalton was charged with second-degree aggravated Unlicensed Operation.  Both were taken to the city jail pending arraignment.

City woman arrested on drug charges following traffic stop...
A 32 year-old woman has been arrested following a traffic stop in Jamestown in which police found her in possession of a quantity of fentanyl.  City police say members of the Violent Crime and K-9 Units conducted the stop in the area of Crescent St. about 1:40 a.m. last Thursday.  Officers say Taylor O'Neil was the driver... and they spotted drug paraphernalia in plain view.  Police then searched the vehicle... and found the fentanyl in property belonging to O'Neil.  She was taken into custody without incident... while two male passengers were released on scene.  O'Neil was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, also issued traffic citations.  She was taken to the city jail where she was booked... and, release with an appearance ticket for city court.

Celoron man recently arrested locally for drug trafficking now facing federal charges...
The Celoron man arrested last week by Chautauqua County Sheriff's officers has now been formally arrested by federal authorities for drug trafficking.  U.S Attorney Trini Ross says 30 year-old Darin Butts was taken into custody on one count of possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine.  Prosecutors say investigators conducted surveillance on an East Duquesne St. home... and, they saw Butts leaving the residence recently.  They saw him remove a black and white shopping bag from his vehicle and place it into his girlfriend's car.  The woman later gave police permission to search the vehicle... and they found the bag, which contained a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine.  It was packaged in smaller, individual-sized quantities, along with a scale, packaging materials, and cash.  A backpack containing a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine was also recovered.  All together... police seized about 856 grams of meth... and, Butts was taken into custody.  He faces a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years, a maximum of life and a $10-million fine.

Fletcher Elementary School teacher gives students and parents tips for preparing for new school year...
School begins in a little more than a week, and Amanda Sischo, principal of Fletcher Elementary School in Jamestown has some reminders for parents and families.  She says now is the best time to start getting children back "into the routine" of getting up and going to school.  Sischo says this is an ideal time to think about another routine that can make for an easier start to the school day... and, that involves laying out their child's backpacks and supplies, along with their clothes.  Otherwise, Sischo makes one other request of parents and caregivers... for now and throughout the school year... and, that's read with your child.  More on what’s been happening this summer at Fletcher Elementary later this week on WJTN newscasts.

Goodskills Provider Fair to be held in Jamestown Tuesday...
People looking for better jobs could find a ‘helping hand’ tomorrow at the Crystal Ball Room in the Hotel Jamestown Building.  ‘Goodskills’ is presenting a Community Outreach Provider Fair.  Community Outreach Liason Bryan Boleratz with Goodskills, says around 25 organizations will be there to provide information on jobs they have open.  While some potential employers will be there... Boleratz says the fair will also connect job seekers with other resources as well... such as help with finances, housing, daycare and job opportunities.  The fair runs from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Crystal Ballroom.  Goodskills has an office at Jamestown Community College and offers periodic, free training focused on the skills needed in high-tech manufacturing.  Goodskills is a part of Goodwill of Western New York and receives funds from a Build Back Better Regional Challenge Award.

Three arrested on drug and weapons charges during traffic stop in Jamestown...
Three Jamestown area men have been arrested on drug trafficking and weapons charges following a traffic stop on the city's eastside last night.  City police say their Violent Crime and K-9 Units conducted the traffic stop for violations in the area of Pine and East Fifth Streets shortly after 6:30 p.m.  Officers talked with the three occupants... identified as 22 year-old Allen Correa-Sanchez... 42 year-old Christian Mojica-Medina and 29 year-old Jerry Rivera-Diaz.  They searched the vehicle... and, found drug paraphernalia in plain view.  They also found a loaded Smith and Wesson Semi-automatic handgun... with two 16 round magazines as well as a 30.5-grams of cocaine, and 16.8 grams of fentanyl, all individually package for sale.  All three men were arrested without incident and taken to the city jail.  Police say all three are charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, second and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.  They also found Mojica-Modina and Diaz in possession of Clonazepam and Alprazolam... and Diaz was also found with a small quantity of fentanyl in his possession.  They faces additional drug possession charges.  All three were jailed pending arraignment.

Local man arrested - again - for public lewdness...
A Jamestown area man has been arrested for the fourth time this year for public lewdness after allegedly exposing himself to three people early this morning.  City police were called to Covenant Manor at 23 West Third St. shortly after Midnight for a man allegedly exposing himself.  Officers say they found that 40 year-old Kenneth Trask also committed a lewd act in front of the three people... two of whom were children.  Trask was taken into custody... and, was also found in possession of an illegal drug.  He's charged with three counts of first-degree public lewdness... two counts of endangering the welfare of a child... and, one count of criminal possession of a controlled substance.  He was held pending arraignment.

Hochul calls on feds to provide assistance to deal with NYC, state migrant surge...
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is pleading for help from the federal government to deal with the state's migrant crisis... including a faster pathway to give them temporary work status.  During an address this afternoon in Albany... Hochul said -- over the past year -- more than 100,000 migrants have come into the state.  Many of them have had to be housed and fed at a cost of between $1-billion and $1.5-billion.  Hochul says the state can't shoulder anymore of the burden to provide shelter, public health, transit and case management for asylum seekers.  With that... Hochul says she's written to the Biden Administration... urging it to provide help in four key areas.  The main one is expediting worker authorization... and, second, financial support for housing vouchers, and other services. 

Wendel continues State of Emergency with migrant surge still in play...
Gov. Hochul did extend her thanks to the upstate counties that have allowed migrant into their counties and relieving some of New York City's burden.  She did not mention counties... like Chautauqua... that have put States of Emergency in effect since mid-May preventing local municipalities and hotels from contracting with New York City to house migrants.  County Executive P.J. Wendel has again extended the county's emergency order another five-days.  The order first went into effect last May 18.

Two arrested for drug possession following traffic stop...
Two people familiar to police have been arrested following a traffic stop on Jamestown's eastside for alleged drug possession.  City police say their Violent Crime, and STOP DWI Units stopped a car on East Second Street shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday night for multiple traffic infractions.  Officers say they found 49 year-old Jenell Long... and, 33 year-old James Mawhir... in possession of a small quantity of fentanyl.  Both were arrested without incident... and, taken to the city jail.  While at the jail... police found a quantity of methamphetamine in Mawhir's possession.  He's charged with two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... while Long faces one count of seventh-degree criminal possession.  Both were issued appearance tickets for City Court at a later date.

Four arrested for alleged underage alcohol sales... 
Four city residents have been arrested for allegedly selling alcohol to underaged buyers during a State Police initiative in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties.  Troopers say they conducted the underage drinking initiative Wednesday at nine different establishments in both counties.  Police say this involves testing retail sellers of alcoholic beverages, by having underaged, undercover operatives, under direct State Police supervision try to purchase alcohol.  They say this is done to ensure compliance with state law and restrictions on selling alcohol to minors.  Those cited included: 41 year-old Andarrel Allen... 21 year-old Marlenys Velazquez... 26 year-old Nicholas Crossley... and, 60 year-old Lori Gianetti... all of Jamestown.

JHS Marching Band to host preview show tonight...
The Jamestown High School Marching Band has been doing 'intensive' practice this week on their fall show called 'Big Quest.'  Band Director Meghan Murray, says the public was able to get an early look at the show tonight at Strider Field.  Murray said they may not have the entire show ready for tonight, but, likely most of it.  The music for 'Big Quest' was taken from video games.  The band's Assistant Director, Marc Lentsch, has arranged the music for several past shows, and took on even more this year.  Lentch says he's written the music and the band's drill... and, he's pleased it's all gone well so far.

Celoron man arrested on drug charges following Wednesday afternoon raid...
A Celoron man has been arrested following a raid on his home Wednesday afternoon that uncovered a crystal methamphetamine trafficking and distribution operation.  Sheriff's officers say members of their Narcotics Unit... the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force... and, other agencies... completed a four-month investigation by executing a search warrant at 19 East Duquesne St.  There they found 30 year-old Darin Butts, Jr., and, about two-pounds of crystal methamphetamine, scales, packaging materials and a large amount of cash that was seized.  As a result of the investigation... Butts was taken into custody and will be held at the county jail until he is arraigned on federal charges in the Western District of New York Court in Buffalo.  

Borrello makes renewed push to get Nourish-NY Program back on track...
New York state and local elected officials are trying to send a message to Governor Kathy Hochul to "fix" the Nourish NY program.  At a news conference in Dunkirk late Tuesday... State Senator George Borrello says the program was changed from the Department of Agriculture to the Department of Health.  Borrello says a legislative change may not be needed, because the governor could make that change through executive action.  Chautauqua County Rural Ministry is among the programs that have lost funding.  Board President Allan Steinberg says the agency has had to make deep cuts... including multiple lay-offs, and changing their executive director from full-time to part-time status to save money.  

Miami woman found with nearly 10-pounds of mainly fentanyl in her car pleads guilty in the case...
The Florida woman arrested late last year in Jamestown after the vehicle she was driving was found with nearly 10 pounds of fentanyl hidden inside the car has pleaded guilty in the case.  U.S. Attorney Trini Ross says 65 year-old Elina Martinez of Miami entered the plea Wednesday before U.S. District Judge Richard Arcara to possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl.  Prosecutors say city police stopped Martinez's car last Dec. 7 for a number of traffic violations.  She then produced her driver's license and car rental paperwork.  She also allowed police to search the car... and, they later found an “aftermarket” car battery that appeared to be too large for the car, and that it had been tampered with.  Officers cut into the battery and found a plastic bag containing a large quantity of blue pills.  Martinez was detained, and police later found the pills to be about 4,400 grams of fentanyl.  Martinez faces up to 40 years in prison... and, a $5-million fine when she's sentenced on Dec. 8.

Jamestown man pleads guilty to being part of fentanyl distribution ring...
A city man has admitted to his role in a narcotics trafficking ring in Jamestown... and, now faces at least 10 years in prison when he is sentenced next January.  U.S. Attorney Trini Ross has announced that 63 year-old Brian Cessna entered the guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Lawrence Vilardo to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute, 400 grams or more of fentanyl.  Prosecutors say Cessna bought and sold heroin and fentanyl, for profit and his own use, in the conspiracy.  He's also accused of helping co-conspirator Holly Berenguer sell heroin and fentanyl, for profit and her own use, delivering on her behalf and collecting payments.  A co-defendant -- Joseph Zaso -- was Berenguer’s source of supply.  Cessna used his Fairview Avenue home for drug trafficking... and, also allowed Berenguer to use the residence to sell drugs.  Ross says Berenguer and co-defendants Denver Komenda and Richard Philbrick were previously convicted, and are awaiting sentencing.  Charges remain pending against four other co-defendants -- including Zaso.  The charges carry a maximum of life in prison... and, a $10-million fine.  

Jackals Basketball needs a new team residence...
The owner of the Jamestown Jackals is facing one of the biggest challenges in the basketball team’s eight year history .  Kayla Crosby says they’re losing access to their residence, which included 12 bedrooms and five bathrooms the past six year.  Crosby says the home is being sold next week.  Integrity First, the organization that operates the team, is a not for profit with a limited budget.  Paying the cost of housing for a dozen players plus coaches could be crippling to the Jackals, but Crosby says she won’t let her thinking go that way.  Having a team house has allowed players to bond as a team, and also meant they could stay in Jamestown beyond the February through June season to conduct clinics and mentoring programs the rest of the year.  If you can help... City lawmakers get update on efforts to beef up parking ramp security...
City officials in Jamestown will soon put out requests for proposals for new security cameras, and improved lighting for it's two main parking garages in the downtown area.  That from Mayor Eddie Sundquist... who says the city got initial quotes of about $250,000 for the project at the Spring and Cherry Street Ramps.  Sundquist was asked if the city could move ahead quicker on the lighting while waiting for the new cameras.  He says that could be done quicker at the Cherry Street facility because it can be adaptied to LED lighting... which adds to the lighting "spray."  Several patrons of the Spring Street Ramp... including Chautauqua County employees who use the facility... voiced concerns earlier this month over safety in the ramps.  Sundquist says the amount quoted for the project was a ballpark figure to lawmakers would have some idea of the cost.  He says the new signage in the ramps has been ordered.  

City Councilman calls for signs to be added to Jamestown's three main bridges to include Suicide Hotline...
An at-large Jamestown City Councilman wants to have signs put up on each of the city's three, major bridges to help anyone who may considering taking their own life.  Republican Jeff Russell voiced his desire to see the signs put up during the Public Safety Committee meeting... then again during the council's work session Monday night.  Russell says... it's a national problem... and, also a Jamestown problem.  He says there are members of council who have been "touched" by suicide.  Fellow councilmembers voiced strong support for the move... with at least one saying they would pay for one of the signs.  There was some question about who would have to sign-off on the move... but, Council Public Works Committee Chairman Randy Daversa felt the state Department of Transporation would likely have no problems with it.  Mayor Eddie Sundquist said his office would contact both the DOT and Chautauqua County to see what the process would be to put the signs on the Third, Sixth and, Washington Street Bridges.

Brocton man arrested following altercation in the village...
A north county man has been arrested for allegedly choked someone during an altercation in the village of Brocton late Tuesday night.  Sheriff's officers were called to a Central Ave. location just before 11:30 p.m. on a reported altercation involving 34 year-old Russell Genevese, Junior of Brocton and another person.  Deputies investigated... and, arrested Genevese for fourth-degree criminal mischief... and two counts of criminal obstruction of breathing.  He was taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.

Man arrested in Jamestown for trespassing in condemned home...
A 26 year-old man has been arrested for trespassing after being found inside a condemned home on Jamestown's northside early Tuesday morning.  City police were called to 2229 Washington St. just after 5 a.m. on a report of a male subject who had just entered a condemned building.  Officers say they found Matthew Little inside the building.  Little was taken into custody and transported to the city jail without incident.  He was charged with third-degree criminal trespassing... and, issued an appearance ticket for city court.

Hochul announces expansion project at Wells in Dunkirk...
An ice cream manufacturing plant in Dunkirk is planning a major expansion that company officials say will bring 200 new jobs to the region.  New York Governor Kathy Hochul Tuesday announced that Wells Enterprises... which produces ice cream and frozen novelty products... will be adding those new jobs to the 401 already at the 1 Ice Cream Dr. location.  Hochul says the state is supporting the project with up to $10-million in Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits... and, a $6 million grant from Empire State Development.  In exchange... Wells is pledging to add the new jobs... and, invest capital to make Wells into a 'state-of-the-art' plant.  Wells' Chief Executive Officer Liam Killeen says the Dunkirk facility will play an important role in the company’s expansion plans for it's Blue Bunny, Halo Top, Bomb Pop and Blue Ribbon Classics brands.  The expansion is expected to more than double the facility's current production capacity... and, is expected to begin in the fourth-quarter of this year.

Dipson closes Chautauqua Mall Cinema's I and II...
A pair of long-standing Dipson movie theaters in the Chautauqua Mall in Lakewood have closed... and, much of the equipment has been moved to their other location on Fairmount Avenue in the village.  Dipson's Regional General Manager Jacob Feldt says the decision was a difficult one... but, adds there were physical problems with the Mall location... and, foot traffic has been down since the COVID Pandemic.  Feldt says the equipment and several chairs from the mall location will go to their other facilities at the Warren Mall... and, Lakewood Cinema-8.  Cinemas I and II in the Mall actually closed last Wednedsay. 

Additional charges placed against Burham during initial court appearance in Warren Co., Pa...
A man who was the subject of a massive manhunt in two states last month after his escape from the Warren County Jail is facing more charges in both the escape... and, in the original case alleging he kidnapped a couple and forced them to accompany him on his effort to evade authorities.  34 year-old Michael Burham is also the primary suspect in the shooting death of Jamestown's Kala Hodgkin back on May 11 before fleeing the area to Pennsylvania.  District Court Judge Raymond Zydonik in Warren County ruled during Monday's preliminary hearings there was enough evidence to forward both cases against Burham to the Court of Common Pleas.  He's accused of abducting the couple in Pennsylvania while trying to escape capture in Chautauqua County... where he was wanted in a rape case and for questioning in Hodgkin's murder.  A 68-year-old Mead Township woman testified that she and her 89-year-old husband were driven 18 hours to South Carolina before they were dropped off in a cemetery.

Burham was first arrested on May 24 in South Carolina... and charged with kidnapping, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, assault, terroristic threats, theft, and many other counts.  Warren County District Attorney Rob Greene brought additional charges Monday in that case -- including four more kidnapping counts.  Burham also faces more charges stemming from the July 6 escape from the Warren County lock-up... which officials said Burham fled by climbing onto exercise equipment, going through a window and scaling down a rope fashioned from jail bedding.  He was recaptured July 15 just outside Warren after a barking dog alerted a couple that he was on their property.

City man arrested for illegal possession of several firearms, and drugs...
A Jamestown man faces several felony charges following a raid on a southside home late last week that resulted in the seizure of numermous firearms and drugs.  City police say they executed a search warrant at 76 Victoria Ave. about 6:40 p.m. last Thursday with the help of the JPD SWAT Team.  Officers say they found a convicted Felon... 43 year-old Michael Hitchcock... who was taken into custody.  Police say they also found two handguns, eight rifles, two shotguns, one muzzleloader, and an AR-15 rifle... along with ammunition.  Officers say Hitchcock faces three counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon... two counts third-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and, 11 counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.  Police also found methamphetamine ready for sale... and, Hitchock was also charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia.  Sheriff's officers assisted with the raid.  Hitchcock was jailed pending arraignment.

City lawmakers begin review of $2.7-million in non-profit ARPA funding with $1.5-million left...
Some difficult decisions will have to be made in the coming weeks on how to use the remaining $1.5-million from the city of Jamestown's American Rescue Plan Act allocation.  During last night's City Council work session... lawmakers began discussing requests from nine different non-profit organizations vying for some of that funding.  Grants Manager Tim O'Dell with the Department of Development says some of the city's $28-million dollar ARPA award can be used to support such projects coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic for underserved communities.  Funding requests for those nine projects total $2.7-million.  The largest... says O'Dell... is $1-million for construction of a YMCA facility.  He says they've already raised $4-million towards their goal... and, need the ARPA funds to begin construction next year.  O'Dell says the requests include $500,000 towards the new "Kids Zone" at the Northwest Arena... and, $350,000 for the Robert H. Jackson Center.  There's also $200,000 each for the National Comedy Center, and St. Lukes Episcopal Church... $181,000 for Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc., $145,000 for the YWCA.  Collaborative Children's Solutions... and, the Roger Tory Peterson Institute are requesting less than $100,000 each.

Jamestown man arrested for allegedly setting fire to vacant house...
A city man has been indicted by the Chautauqua County Grand Jury for allegedly setting a fire that destroyed a vacant house on Jamestown's southside early last month.  City police say Jamestown firefighters were called to the scene at 231 Barrows St. shortly after 1 a.m. last July 6.  Investigators later determined the blaze was caused by arson... and that resulted in the indictment of 34 year-old Joshua Whalen for third-degree arson, and third-degree burglary.  Police add that Whalen is currently on New York State Parole for a previous arson conviction... and, he was remanded to the Chautauqua County Jail on $50,000 cash bail... $100,000 property bond.  City police say the investigation into this fire... and, other arson incidents are ongoing.  They add that additional charges are possible.  Anyone with additional information on this or other arsons is asked to call City Police at 483-7537... or the confidential tip line at 483-TIPS... that's 483-8477.

Borrello pleased with anti wind turbine protest at Sunset Bay...
A rally opposing wind turbines in Lake Erie drew more than 200 people to Sunset Bay over the weekend.  State Senator George Borrello, who was one of elected officials who spoke out against a proposal installing the turbines, was pleased with the turnout at the rally held on Saturday, which also included Buffalo-area lawmakers.  The rally was one of many events that have been held in recent years by Citizens Against Wind Turbines in Lake Erie.

City pair arrested for home invasion -- attempted robbery at northside home...
Two Jamestown men have been arrested for allegedly committing a home invasion... and, attempted robbery early this morning on the city's northside.  Jamestown Police say they were called to the scene shortly before 1 a.m., and, were told that one of the suspects -- 29 year-old Devon Wilson -- had fled with another suspect.  Officers learned that Wilson and 20 year-old Kaleb Dean had unlawfully entered the house... and Wilson was armed with a rifle and knife.  He's accused of using the weapons to threaten multiple victims inside the residence.  He also allegedly tried to forcibly take an item from one of the victims... but, was unsuccessful.  He and Dean were later found... and, Wilson still had the knife used in the incident.  Wilson is charged with first-degree attempted robbery... first-degree burglary... two counts of second-degree menacing... third-degree criminal posession of a weapon... and, fourth-degree conspiracy.  Dean was charged with second-degree burglary... and fourth-degree conspiracy.  Both were jailed pending arraignment.

Two Jamestown teens arrested following incident at downtown bar...
Two teenagers have been arrested on drug and other charges following a complaint of a "person with a weapon" at a bar on Jamestown's northside early last weekend.  City police were called to The Wine Cellar at 309 North Main St. shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday... and, found a 17 year-old male juvenile with a quantity of cocaine.  Officers say that... while they were trying to secure evidence... 18 year-old Kira Christensen attempted to destroy evidence by throwing suspected narcotic drugs into the roadway.  Police took her into custody along with the unidentified 17 year-old on charges including seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia... and, Felony tampering with physical evidence.  Christensen was jailed pending arraignment... while the 17 year-old was released to his parents.

Man from Lakewood arrested for drug possession following traffic stop in Jamestown...
A Lakewood man has been arrested on drug related charges following a traffic stop on Jamestown's southside late last week.  City police say members of the JPD Violent Crimes and K-9 units stopped a vehicle in the area of South Main Street just after 1:30 a.m. last Friday for multiple traffic infractions.  Officers say they spoke with 57 year-old Ronald Decker... and, searched the vehicle.  Police say they located quantities of methamphetamine... cocaine... and oxycodone pills.  Decker was arrested on two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and one count each of fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, failure to stop at a Stop Sign.  He was taken to the city jail, pending arraignment.

JCC, SUNY Fredonia begin Fall classes today...
The Fall Semester of classes at SUNY Jamestown Community College's three locations begins today... and, enrollment is looking the best it has since the beginning of the pandemic.  That from JCC President Dr. Daniel DeMarte... and, Vice-President of Student Affairs, Dr. Kirk Young.  Young says enrollment is up by about 50 full-time equivalents (FTEs) compared to last year at this time... and, that's led to renewed enthusiasm at the college.  He says the energy level is already up, and "everyone's excited that our enrollment's up."  Both Young and DeMarte say it's been a busy Summer at the college... with increased enrollment there as well.  DeMarte says they had their largest Summer enrollment in four years this year.  He adds they are in the concluding stages of a capital project that replaces the gas heat loop for all their buildings.  They made their comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Media One Radio Group stations.

TRC's Edgewater Art House opens...
The Resource Center's Key Bank-Edgewater Art House is officially open.  The ribbon was cut Friday afternoon.  The Edgewater Art House started as some old garage space at the back of the Resource Center building along the Chadakoin River at the boatlanding.  Resource Center CEO, Denise Jones, said it took four years and over $600,000 to complete the transformation to a full art facility.  Jones feels it "really exemplifies how our community pulls together..." from members, to staff and others.  COVID related inflation in building costs might have stalled the project were it not for the help of the Key Bank/First Niagara Foundation and Empire State Development.  Together they contributed over half the cost.  TRC employees and members contributed another $50,000. 

Despite schedule changes, 13 to 15 year-old Babe Ruth World Series concludes on schedule with Portland, Ore. taking the title...
Inspite of two days of schedule changes and moving some game times early last week... the 13-to-15 year-old Babe Ruth World Series in Jamestown concluded successfully last Saturday afternoon.  On one of the best weather days of the week... Portland, Ore. won the tournament... downing Norwalk, Conn. in the Championship Game, 6-4.  Portland went up 6-2 early on, and held off the New England Champions for the win.  Tournament Director Leonard Hammer of Fowler, California was very pleased with how the week went... and praised the local committee and grounds crew for their work.  Hammer and Local Babe Ruth Committee Vice-President Kim Ecklund praised everyone involved in keeping the tournament on schedule inspite of mid-week rains that forced some games to start early.  As for the games... Ecklund says there were 11 games prior to the championship game that were decided by one run, and three involved the host Jamestown team.

Roof fire at Grape Co-Op in Westfield blamed on boiler problem...
Firefighters from six departments made quick work of a roof fire that broke out on one of the buildings at the Grower's Co-op on North Portage Street in the village of Westfield this morning. We have learned that the fire was first reported by a CSX freight train operator that was passing by the facility.  Chautauqua County's 911 Dispatch center says crews from Westfield, Ripley, Sherman, Portland, Mayville and Brocton responded to the fire around 6:40 a.m.  They had the fire out shortly after 7:30.  It's believed a boiler may have triggered the fire.

Fire destroys home in Forestville...          
Flames early Monday morning extensively damaged a home in Forestville.   The Chautauqua County Fire Investigation Team reports Hanover Center firefighters were called to the scene at 391 Versailles Rd. shortly after 3 a.m., and, were joined by multiple mutual aid companies.  The house reportedly collapsed due to the fire.  The fire investigation team was called in to look for the cause.  No injuries were reported.

Quattrone looks at recent spike in fires in county...
With a recent increase in the number of fires in Chautauqua County this Summer... Sheriff Jim Quattrone is urging residents to have working smoke detectors in their homes.  The county's Fire Investigation Team has been called to a number of locations... has been able to find causes in most all of them -- and, most have been accidental.  Quattrone says smoke detectors are a proven way to help alert residents to smoke and fire in their homes.  Some have been combustables too close to a heat source, and overloaded power strips.  As for having a working smoke alarm in your home... he says make sure to change the batteries at least yearly.  He adds families should also have an escape plan.  

City woman arrested after man found on roof of her car during domestic dispute...
A Jamestown woman is accused of reckless endangerment following a domestic incident in which a man ended up on the roof of her car... while she was driving on the city's eastside.  City police say they were called to a report of a man on the roof of a moving vehicle shortly after 3 p.m. last Saturday.  Officers located the vehicle... being driven by 28 year-old Rochelle Leak-Brown... with the man still on top.  They were able to get Brown to stop without further incident.  Their investigation showed that the man was already on top of the car when Brown got in at a different location... and began driving off with three children inside the vehicle.  At one point... the man did fall off the roof and sustained a leg injury.  Brown was arrested for first-degree reckless endangerment... three counts of endangering the welfare of a child... and, fourth-degree criminal mischief.  She was jailed pending arraignment.

BRWS Tournament Dir. praises Jamestown community, and Diethrick Park, for efforts this week...
The man's who came to Jamestown to direct the 13 to 15 year-old Babe Ruth World Series says things are going well.  Leonard Hammer of Fowler, Calif. says "the quality of play has been good..." and, the cooperation of the local committee has been "outstanding."  Hammer is the Tournament Director for the World Series in Jamestown.  He's particularly pleased with Russell E. Diethrick, Jr. Park which he calls "absolutely awesome."  He adds the grounds crews is "amazing."  In the few days he's been here, Hammer's become an ambassador for the city... says he wants all visitors to believe this was "the best place they could have traveled to this summer."  He says the local team is "very good," even though they've lost their past two games.  The Jamestown team's next game is set for tonight at 7 p.m. 

Man arrested in town of Ellicott for DWI, and illegal possession of loaded handgun...
A 33 year-old man has been arrested in the town of Ellicott after being found drunk behind the wheel of his car... and, in possession of a loaded handgun.  Ellicott Town Police say they stopped to check on the well being of a person in a car parked on Fluvanna Avenue about 3 a.m. last Saturday.  Officers say they found Joseph Fontanez-Walker inside... and, during a search of the vehicle... bound a bag that contained the handgun.  Fontanez-Walker was arrested for driving while intoxicated... second-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation.  He was issued appearance tickets for Ellicott Town Court at a later date.

Grain Safety event scheduled for Thursday night in Hartfield...
The Chautauqua County Farm Bureau is sponsoring a 'Grain Bin Safety Event' Thursday at the Hartfield Fire Department.  Farm Bureau President Dick Kimball says he hopes farmers and first responders will attend, as there are some 75 such bins in Chautauqua County.  Kimball says getting stuck in one can become very dangerous... very quickly because it's "like quicksand."  The program runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday... and will include an actual demonstration of a person caught in a bin.  Kimball points out the flow of grain can get hung up on the side walls, and then someone has to go in and break-down the bridging.  The Thursday event is free and no registration is required.  Kimball adds the Farm Bureau has applied for a grant from Nationwide Insurance for a 'chute' that could aid in grain bin rescues.

Ellery man arrested for arson in Maple Springs fire, and threatening person with knife...
A town of Ellery man has been arrested for allegedly setting an out-building on fire... and, threatening another person with a knife before fleeing the scene.  Sheriff's officers say Ellery Center firefighters were intially called to the scene on the Maple Springs-Ellery Road about 8:30 a.m. last Saturday on a report of a structure fire.  Crews found the building fully-involved in flames... and, several other mutual aid companies were called in.  Late this morning... deputies announced the arrest of 41 year-old Daniel Lutgen... who was accused of displaying a knife, and making threatening statement to the victim.  He's then accused of setting the fire while another person was inside the structure.  That person did get out safely.  Lutgen then fled to scene... but, later returned and was taken into custody on one count each of second-degree arson... and, second-degree menacing.  He was jailed pending arraignment.

Sunday morning fire in Falconer damages home...
A pet dog had to be rescued... but, no one was hurt in a Sunday morning house fire in the village of Falconer.  In a post on the Falconer Fire Department Facebook page... officials say crews responded to 221 East Pearl St. about 10:15 a.m., and found fire on one side of the house that partially went into the attic.  Mutual aid was called in from Kennedy... Gerry... and, Kiantone crews.  Ellicott Town Police and Chautauqua County EMS helped in rescuing a German Shepherd from the home.  County fire dispatchers say crews were at the scene until about Noon.  County fire investigators say a faulty electrical service line was the cause of the blaze.

Weather issues pushed Babe Ruth World Series opening ceremony to Sunday night... games started at 9 a.m. Monday...
The City of Jamestown and longtime World Series Host President Russ Diethrick were lauded Sunday night at the opening ceremony for the 13 to 15 year-old Babe Ruth World Series at Diethrick Park.  Tournament Director, Leonard Hammer of Fowler, California, presented a plaque to Jamestown, and noted the city's long history of hosting World Series events.  Hammer noted that this was the 19th world series hosted by Jamestown... and, noted his decades long association with Russ Diethrick, and presented a plaque to him as well.  In customary fashion, Russ was deferential to others whose "shoulders he's stood on" for all the series Jamestown has hosted.  The local team won it's opener over Broomall, Pennsylvania, 7-2... but, fell to Opp, Alabama last night, 8-7.  Today's games are starting two hours earlier than scheduled in hopes of getting ahead of the rain forecast for the night tonight. 

Melody Thomas Scott coming to Jamestown for Little Theater fundraiser...
Attention fans of the soap opera ‘The Young and the Restless’: Longtime star of that show, Melody Thomas Scott, is coming here Tuesday for a fundraiser for the Lucille Ball Little Theater of Jamestown.  Speaking by phone from Los Angeles, Scott says it'll be a one of a kind of show with a lot of film clips and photos, and a question and answer time with the audience.  "Always Young and Restless, An Evening with Melody Thomas Scott" will run from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Little Theater on East Second Street.  Tickets are $45 and going fast.  They are available at LBLTJ.com. 

Jamestown man arrested after trying to elude capture following burglary...     
A city man has been arrested after allegedly stealing items from an eastside business... and, trying to escape capture by climbing out a window onto a second-story roof.  Jamestown police were called to the unidentified business on East Second Street shortly before 8 a.m., Saturday, and, cleared the building.  They found that the suspect, 37 year-old Steven Lester, had gone through the window onto the roof.  Lester then climbed onto air conditioning units and made his way to the third-floor.  Police found him there... with the several items that had been stolen.  Lester was also found to have allegedly defecated inside the businesses shower.  He was arrested for third-degree burglary... fourth-degree criminal mischief... and petty larceny.  Lester was jailed pending arraignment.

City man found passed-out in Spring Street parking ramp arrested for drug possession...
A Jamestown man has been arrested after taking narcotic drugs in a stairwell inside the Spring Street Parking Ramp... and then passing out.  City police were called to a reported trespass in the ramp about 9:30 p.m. last Friday... and, when they arrived, multiple juveniles told them that an unknown person was taking drugs in stairwell.  Officers checked... and, found 28 year-old Jeremy Lyons asleep on the floor near a puddle of urine, with numerous hypodermic instruments, and, other drug paraphernalia in plain sight.  They found a quantity of amphetamines in Lyon's possession.  He was awakened and taken into custody.  At the city jail... police found that Lyons had failed to appear in court for some previous incidents... and, was held pending arraignment on those, and a new charge of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Jamestown chamber's "Cruise-In" a big success...
It was a perfect Friday night to "cruise" into downtown Jamestown... with the local band "In Crowd" entertaining a huge crowd at Third and North Main Streets... as more than 200 vintage, classic and modified cars and trucks were on hand for the 30th downtown "Cruise-In."  Chief Organizer, Carrie Swanson, with the Jamestown Community Chamber of Commerce, agreed the weather brought out the cars... and, the crowd.  Swanson says it was sunny but, not too warm. 

City man pleads guilty to federal drug trafficking charges leading to two overdose deaths...
A Jamestown man has pleaded guilty to trafficking illegal narcotic drugs... including fentanyl and heroin resulting in two overdose deaths.  U.S. Attorney Trini Ross has announced that 35 year-old Steven Mojica-Medina pled guilty before U.S. District Judge Richard Arcara to possession with intent to distribute, and distribution of, heroin, fentanyl, and acetyl fentanyl, and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.  Prosecutors say back in August of 2018... Medina was accused of selling fentanyl... and a fentanyl analogue mixture to a person identified as "J.H..." who died after taking the drugs.  About a week later... Medina is accused of selling a substance containing heroin, fentanyl, and acetyl fentanyl to a person, who then sold it to a person identified as "J.T." who then overdosed and died.  In late 2020... Jamestown Police made undercover drug buys from Medina... and his Euclid Avenue home was later raided.  Police found two loaded firearms, a drug ledger, 48 bags of fentanyl weighing 1.76 grams, and cocaine.  Then in November of 2020... Medina was pulled over in his vehicle by city police... and, they recovered a 9mm semi-automatic pistol... six magazines and about 167 rounds of ammunition.  He also had 24 wrapped baggies of crack cocaine.  Medina is a convicted Felony, and is prohibited from possessing a firearm.  He's to be sentenced next Dec. 11, and, faces a maximum penalty of 50 years in prison and a $1-million fine.

Investigation ongoing into vacant house fire on Jamestown's eastside...
City firefighters had to battle flames in a vacant and condemned home on Jamestown's eastside... and, keep the fire away from a neighboring house overnight.  City Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Rousch says crews were called to 901 East Second St. shortly before Midnight... and, found heavy flames coming from the back of the home.  Rousch says it appeared the blaze might also be spreading to a neighboring home.  He says firefighters also quickly evacuated the next door home at 903 East Second before turning full attention to the fire.  He says city police assisted in making sure that anyone inside either home had gotten out.  Rousch says once the blaze was knocked down from the outside... an interior crew went inside 901 East Second to get the flames out there.  An off-duty shift was called in.  Firefighters were at the scene until 4:30 a.m. Thursday.  The Department of Development was called in to assess the damage.  No injuries were reported... and, the cause is under investigation.

A four-month probe into illegal narcotics sales from a residence in the city of Dunkirk led to the arrest of one person Wednesday.  Dunkirk Police Chief Dave Ortolano says narcotics investigators executed a search warrant at 75 Ruggles St. shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday.  Ortolano says police arrested 44 year-old  Antoine Jones for third-degree criminal possession, and criminal sale of a controlled substance... and, criminal nuisance.  He says the arrest was the result of a cooperative effort from multiple agencies... including Jamestown Police.  Jones was arraigned in Dunkirk City Court and is being held in the county jail.

Fire damages East Second St. home, but, firefighters stop spread to house next door...
An overnight fire in a vacant and condemned home on Jamestown's eastside kept city fire crews busy for several hours.  Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Roush says firefighters were called to 901 East Second St. shortly before Midnight Thursday... and, found heavy flames coming from the back corner of the house.  Rousch says there was possible extension into the home at 903 East Second.  He says fire crews, and city police helped to evacuate that residence... and, checked for people inside the unoccupied structure.  No one was found inside as crews began battling the blaze.  Rousch says an off-duty shift was called in... and once the bulk of the fire was nocked down outside... crews put out the fire inside the structure.  No injuries were reported.  Crews were at the scene until about 4:30 a.m., and, the cause is under investigation.  

Woman identified as victim in fatal car-pedestrian accident in town of Dunkirk...
A Dunkirk woman has now been identified as the person killed in a car-pedestrian accident Wednesday afternoon in the town of Dunkirk.  Troopers say the accident occured in the parking lot of the Tops plaza on Vineyard Drive.  State Police say the victim... 69 year-old Barbara Sam... was walking north in the parking lot when she was struck by southbound car.  Troopers say she died at the scene.  The State Police Accident Reconstruction Team... and, Bureau of Criminal Investigation were called to the scene.  The investigation is continuing into the incident.  No charges have yet been filed.

Hochul announces new, state strategy for cybersecurity...
Cybersecurity is the focus of a first-in the nation program that's been rolled out by New York Governor Kathy Hochul.  During a press conference in New York City Wednesday... Hochul noted that cyber threats are a major concern facing state governments... and, she says this plan could be the "template" for the nation to address the issue.  She says funding for the effort was included in the state's 2023-24 budget... and says you also have to be weary of threats that get into local government computers, and wind up in the state system.  Hochul says the new system will not only take care of state government... but, some 53,000 computers across local towns, villages and cities... as well as counties... now have this safeguard.  During the announcement... she pointed out the problems Suffolk County faced when hampered by a cyberattack last fall.

Second "Veteran's Wellness Day" at JCC a big success...
Connecting local veteran's with programs that can help them deal with their physical and mental health needs was the focus of a special program Wednesday at Jamestown Community College.  The "Veteran's Wellness Day" at the JCC Student Union was put on by the Suicide Prevention Alliance of Chautauqua County's Veteran's Subcommittee... the Joseph Dwyer Veteran's Peer to Peer Program... and other community partners.  Cindy Reidy with the Dwyer program was chief organizer of the event.... and, says they had a great turn-out.  In fact... Reidy says they probably had at least twice the number of people who attended last year.  She says all the providers they had for the program were thrilled with how it turned out.  Reidy says they hope to make this an annual program for the local veterans.  She says more than 30 veteran-serving partners had booths and displays, dealing with a number of areas, including housing, drug addiction services... and, a special equinne program that's being offered.  However... she says it's not a "riding" type of therapy... the horses mirror the person's emotions to give a better picture of how they are.  Reidy says you can learn more information about the Dwyer Peer to Peer Program on their Facebook page.  You can also call her at 716-969-5542 or via email to reidyc@chqgov.com.

Jamestown man arrested after being found in possession of meth and fentanyl...
A city man was allegedly found with quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl by Jamestown police Monday night while they were investigating his possible involvement in another incident.  City police say officers saw 39 year-old Todd Dalton walking on Lakeview Avenue just before 10 p.m., and, saw he matched the description of a man involved in the other incident.  During their investigation... police found Dalton in possession of 6-grams of meth... and, 7.1-grams of fentanyl that was packaged in individual wrappers... along with a digital scale.  They arrested Dalton on two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, criminally using drug paraphernalia.

Abbott receives Mason Award for United Way...
A long-time member of the Jamestown School Board... and, volunteer soccer coach... is this year's recipient of the Joseph Mason Community Service Award.  Retired Jamestown Police officer Paul Abbott received the honor during the United Way of Southern Chautauqua County's "Salute to Labor" dinner last night at the Harborfront Hotel in Celoron.  Abbott called it a great honor... and, humbling.  He says he and his wife got involved with the JAYS Soccer program when their children played... and, then he got a call about coaching.  Abbott says he knew nothing about the sport... but, developed a passion for the sport.  Abbott has also been Jamestown School Board President the past several years... and, had been on the board for 15 years.  He's been a soccer coach for the past 20 years.  The Mason Award is presented each year by the United Way to a person who gives of their time... and was also involved in local labor.

Fire destroys cabin in Clymer...
A vacant cabin in a wooded-area of the town of Clymer was destroyed in a fire late Tuesday morning.  Chautauqua County fire dispatchers say Clymer firefighters were called to the scene at 7362 Clymer Center Rd. about 10:30 a.m., and, found the structure -- which was located several hundred feet off the road -- fully engulfed in flames.  Clymer was joined at the scene by Panama fire crews... along with County EMS.  No injuries were reported.  Firefighters were at the scene unitl shortly before 1 p.m. No cause has been released.

Cause of trailer fire in Busti Monday blamed on electrical issue...
Chautauqua County fire investigators say Monday afternoon's fire that damaged a trailer home in the town of Busti started accidently.  Officials say Busti firefighters were called to 1151 Wellman Road shortly before 4 p.m., and, were joined by several mutual aid companies.  After putting out the blaze... investigators were called in... and, determined the cause was an electrical issue in a power strip that was inside the residence.  No injuries were reported.

Single-car rollover accident in town of Pomfret sends driver to ECMC...
A Jamestown man was injured in a single-car, rollover accident on Route 60 in the town of Pomfret early Tuesday morning.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to the scene just after 12:30 a.m., and, found the car had left the roadway and struck a telephone pole.  Deputies say the lone occupant of the vehicle, 26 year-old Kade Farbo, was hurt... and, he was taken by ambulance to the Erie County Medical Center for treatment.  Officers say their investigation into the crash is ongoing... and, charges are pending. 

Wendel defends new contract agreements with CSEA, and CCSEA...
Chautauqua County's top elected official is defending the new, four-year contracts recently approved by the county legislature and two employee unions.  The agreements with the Civil Service Employees Association-Local 6300... and, the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Employees Association... both include wage increases.  However... County Executive P.J. Wendel has been criticized by some who say "the county can't afford" them.  However... he says the county can't afford to not have them if they're to recruit and retain good workers.  He adds the contracts were approved by 89% of the union memberships.  Wendel says that's the biggest support of a contract by unions ever in the county that he's aware of.  The new CSEA contract includes 3% increases each year... while the CCSEA increases are 3% the first two years... and, 3.5% the final two.  Wendel says there are some workers who may see up to a 6% increase... but, that's not part of the contracts.  He says it would come from additional "step increases" based on length of service and performance.  Wendel says he understands the concern over adding another $1.7-million to the county's budget... but, adds they'lll look for more cost savings in the 2024 budget to offset that.

Osprey found outside Media One Radio headquarters has to be destroyed after dislocated elbow found...
The story of the injured osprey, found outside the Media One studios early Monday morning, came to a quick and tragic end on Tuesday.  The bird had to be humanely destroyed.  Sandra Emke of TSE Wildlife in Frewsburg transported the osprey to the SPCA in West Seneca where veterinarians found it had a severely dislocated elbow.  With birds this large... she says the elbows a very delecate, and necessary to be able to fly.  Emke says further examination revealed another problem... that being bullet fragments found in his foot and ankle.  SPCA leaders determined there would be no quality of life for the raptor... and, the decision was made to euthanize the animal.  Exactly when the gunshot wound occurred was not clear.  The bird was not bleeding when it was rescued Monday by Emke and Cheryl Burns of Emusing Wildlife.  While not ‘endangered,’ ospreys are listed as a ‘species of special concern’ in New York.  Shooting one is a violation of state and federal law.

Trio from Sinclairville arrested for trespassing, and one for menacing with machete...
Three men from Sinclairville have been arrested for allegedly trespassing on property they had been evicted from... and, one is accused of pulling a machete and threatening the owner.  Sheriff's officers were called to a property on East Road shortly before 9 p.m. Monday for a disorderly person.  They investigated, and found that 40 year-old Jason Koch... 32 year-old Ben Gray... and, 49 year-old John Land had been previously evicted from the residence... and, had returned without the consent of the property owner.  When they were confronted by the owner... Koch had allegedly pulled and displayed the machete towards another person.  All three were ticketed for criminal trespassing and Koch was also charged with second-degree menacing.  They were issued appearance tickets for Charlotte Town Court.

County D.A. announces rape and sexual conduct charges against Jamestown man...
A Jamestown man faces several violent Felony charges after allegedly raping two children under the age of 17 since early 2021.  Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt says 37 year-old Michael Lamb was indicted by the county grand jury on 12 counts... including four counts of predatory sexual assault against a child... and, five counts of first-degree rape.  Schmidt says Lamb also faces one count of first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child... , and two counts of endangering the welfare of a  child.  The D-A says the crimes described in the indictment are alleged to have been committed between February of 2021 and January of this year in the city.  Lamb was arraigned by County Court Judge David Foley... and, pled not guilty to the charges.  Foley set bail at $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond. 

Gasoline prices may begin leveling off after significant increases in recent weeks...
Gasoline prices continue to rise in the Jamestown-area and country... but, AAA says the rate of increase has slowed in recent days.  That from Western and Central New York AAA Spokeswoman, Elizabeth Carey, who says there are signs that gas prices could be stabilizing, as demand winds down with the end of the Summer travel season soon.  However... Carey says there are couple of factors that could impact future prices at the pump.  She says one is the price of crude oil, which is now just under $80 per barrel.  The other is the fact it's hurricane season, and if one knocks refineries off-line, that could produce an increase.  Carey says today's national average is up 7 cents from a week ago.  The New York State average is up 8 cents.  The local price begins the week at just under $3.96 a gallon. 

Wendel says State of Emergency regarding migrants is helping prevent an emergency housing crunch...
If there was no emergency order in place regarding the migrant crisis in Chautauqua County... current issues with emergency housing would be far worse in the area.  That from County Executive P.J. Wendel... who is continuing the order prohibiting hotels, and municipalities from contracting with New York City to bring migrants here.  The local problem with emergency housing for the homeless, and those with mental health, and drug addition issues were recently voiced by Falconer residents to the legislature.  Wendel says, though, in the case of migrants, they aren't able to work, nor receive any services.  He says some members of the New York State Association of Counties recently had the chance to meet with New York City Mayor Eric Adams to try and find some common ground on answers.  He says Adams had been told the migrant crisis at the border has eased somewhat.  However... the mayor of the nation's largest city says they still have 500 migrants coming on buses each day.  Wendel says he's also learned that... while the city says they'll pay the cost to house migrants bused upstate... that may end after four-months.  He made his comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" on the six Media One Radio Group stations.

Firefighters respond to trailer home fire in town of Busti late Monday...
Firefighters from three south county fire departments responded to a trailer home fire in the town of Busti late Monday afternoon.  Chautauqua County Fire Dispatchers say Busti firefighters were called to the location at 1151 Wellman Rd. shortly before 4 p.m., and, were joined by Celoron and Kiantone fire crews.  Heavy smoke was reported by first arriving crews.  No injuries were reported.  The bulk of the fire was reportedly knocked down in under an hour.  No other information was available last night.

Osprey rescued at Media One Studios after suffering broken wing...
These Media One Studios became the site of a dramatic raptor rescue Monday morning.  Our Dennis Webster stepped out onto the patio just before 5 a.m. to check the weather... and, found a large bird hopping about, but unable to fly. I t was an osprey with a broken wing.  Station manager Andrew Hill configured a protective box to cover the bird.  Experienced and licensed animal rescue specialist Cheryl Burns of Emusing Wildlife got word of the bird... and arrived with a blanket and a strategy.  Burns says you have to watch out for the bird's powerful talons used to hunt and grab fish from the water.  Right behind her was Sandra Emke of TSE Wildlife Center with her intern, Kadance.  The group surrounded the osprey.  Cheryl executed her plan and the bird was caught, with no injury to either.  Sandra Emke said the osprey will need expert care... and, will likely be send to a special facility in the Buffalo-area.  

City man arrested following fight, and for stealing purse...
A domestic dispute involving a fight on Jamestown's westside late last Friday has led to the arrest of a 19 year-old city man.  Jamestown Police say they were called to the area of West Fifth Street and Mechanics Alley shortly after 5 p.m., and, saw 19 year-old Kayin Ziolkowski arguing with another man.  Ziolkowski was continuing to show aggressive behavior and started moving towards the other male when officers tried to detain him.  Police say he bagan pulling away... and, after a brief struggle... Ziolkowski was taken into custody.  They later learned that he had a domestic dispute with a female victim... and, grabbed her purse before running off.  He's charged with third-degree robbery and resisting arrest.

Weather Service forecaster says "keep an eye on the sky today" into Tuesday...
If you have plans for outdoor activities today... you should keep an eye to the sky.  Strong to possibly severe thunderstorms could kick up this afternoon... through tonight.  That from Meteorologist Dan Kelly at the National Weather Service in Buffalo.  Kelly says the area is under a slight risk for severe weather.  Kelly says there could be some gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and possibly some small hail.  He says sunshine this morning has helped to destabilize a very humid air mass across the region, setting the stage for strong to potentially severe thunderstorms.

City man arrested following fight on charges -- including robbery...
A domestic dispute involving a fight on Jamestown's westside late last Friday has led to the arrest of a 19 year-old city man.  Jamestown Police say they were called to the area of West Fifth St. and Mechanics Alley shortly after 5 p.m., and, saw 19 year-old Kayin Ziolkowski arguing with another man.  Ziolkowski was continuing to show aggressive behavior and started moving towards the other male when officers tried to detain him.  Police say he bagan pulling away... and, after a brief struggle... Jamestown man arrested for allegedly threatening patrons and police with knife at downtown bar...
A city man has been arrested for allegedly threatening other people and police with a knife during an incident at a bar in downtown Jamestown last Friday night.  City police say they were called to the Cherry Lounge on Cherry Street shortly after 9 p.m. for a reported fight.  When they arrived... officers say several patrons had 41 year-old James Caloren pinned to the ground.  Police say Caloren was in possession of a knife, and was threatening officers with it.  As they were trying to disarm the suspect, and take him into custody, one officer sustained a cut from the knife resulting in a minor injury.  Caloren was then placed under arrest for second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment... third-degree criminal possession of a weapon... resisting arrest... and obstructing governmental administration.  He was then jailed pending arraignment.

Langworthy praises bi-partisan effort to keep pilot training requirement in FAA reauthorization bill...
Local Congressman Nick Langworthy is hopeful that when the final reauthorization legislation for the Federal Aviation Administration comes in for a landing... it will maintain the current 1,500-hour rule for pilot training.  Langworthy says he's proud of the bipartisan effort that included the assistance of Democratic representative Brian Higgins... and fellow Republican Claudia Tenney and the families of Flight 3407.  He says they were able to amend the new bill to include the measure with Higgins help with House Democrats, and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer of New York.  Langworthy also took on a powerful committee chair who was opposed to the amendment.  While the Senate has not yet passed its own version of an FAA reauthorization bill, Langworthy is confident the requirement will remain in the final legislation because Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer has said he will do that.  Langworthy... a Buffalo-area Republican... says the effort has made Western New York the capitol of airline safety. 

Comedy Center dedicates "immersive" theater in names of comedy couple...
The naming ceremony for the multi-media theater at the National Comedy Center on Friday was part celebration, part reunion, and part comedy show.  The comedy was provided by legendary TV Producer George Schlatter, who told those on hand that the people who can make you laugh can say anything.  The theater was named after him and his wife, Jolene.  Schlauter helped create the revolutionary TV comedy ‘Laugh In.’  His friend, Dick Smothers of the Smothers Brothers, spoke of Laugh In’s legacy, and what was great about it was it "was so much fun."  Comedy Center Executive Director, Journey Gunderson, acknowledged the Schlatters’ role in the Comedy Center’s development.  Gunderson says they had the "strength of conviction they had about the concept long before the comedy center existed.  Schlatter also developed the American Comedy Awards, and the program ‘Real People.’  His wife played a role in another revolutionary program, ‘The Ernie Kovacs Show.’

Gerry Rodeo sets new attendance mark;  Ellington Picnic another success...
As the 78th annual Gerry Fire Department Rodeo drew to a close Saturday night... longtime spokesman Paul Cooley surveyed the crowd and said "if this isn't a record year, I guess we've never had one."  He says they had full stands each of the four nights... and, he said late Sunday that total attendance was a new record at 11,297 admissions, with 3,695 roast beef dinners served at the dining hall.  One highlight was a surprise appearance Friday by eight-time world champion tie-down roper Joe Beaver. Joining a rider he’d never worked with before, the pair took second place in the event that night.

In Ellington, the 110th town picnic also enjoyed great success.  Mat Pickup is the President of the Town Picnic Association said it was great to see all the kids in attendance with their families.  Eight varieties of cupcakes sold for over $500 at the annual auction with the proceeds going toward next year’s town picnic. 

Ribbon cut on new exhibit at Comedy Center of jersey worn by "Fluffy" Iglesias at Dodger Stadium record sell-outs...
One of the hottest comedians on tour took the stage during the annual Lucille Ball Comedy Festival at Jamestown's Northwest Arena.  However... Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias was able to get a tour of the National Comedy Center prior to last night's show... and, came away impressed.  Comedy Center Director Journey Gunderson expressed their appreciation to Iglesias for donating a special Los Angeles Dodgers jersey he wore for the first of two sold out shows at Dodger Stadium in 2022.  Gunderson says 45,000 people gathered for both shows, and "shared in laughter with Gabe Iglesias" as the pandemic wound-down.  Iglesias says when he was offered a tour of the Comedy Center... he wasn't sure what to expect.  However... he says he wants to see more of it.  He joked "this place is legit" because it has a concession stand.  More seriously... Iglesias said he's "honored" to be asked to take part in what's shown at the Comedy Center.  Following the speeches... Gunderson and Iglesias cut the ribbon on the new display with his special jersey to rousing applause bolstered by people in town for the Comedy Festival.  He's the first of two headliners to perform this week.  Headliner Taylor Tomlinson performs on stage tonight at the arena.

The headliners of the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival certainly are the big draws for the annual event.  However... one other program that sometimes flies under the radar is the Saturday Stand-up Comedy Showcase.  Comedy Center Director Journey Gunderson says some people have commented that... while they enjoyed the headliners... they equally enjoyed the showcase... which features the best up and coming comics anywhere.  She says you get to see "5 or 6" of the top comedy club talent in North America, and the world.  Gunderson says they have a handful of comedians coming for the showcase... including one who is familiar to Lucy fans... and, has done some narration for exhibits at the Comedy Center.  That's Pat Hazell... who hosts the center's Johnny Carson exhibit... is among them, along with Rachel Finestein -- who is also featured in exhibits through-out the Comedy Center -- along with Turner Sparks, Frankie French and others.  For more information... go on-line to ComedyCenter.org.

Gerry Rodeo featuring 1880's replica stagecoach on the grounds during this week's event...
Night three of the annual Gerry Rodeo is tonight... and, fans entering the parking area at the rodeo grounds this week have been greeted by an 1880's stagecoach replica.  Rodeo Spokesman Paul Cooley says the replica was originally owned by Bill and Lucille Frost of Sinclairville... and, used for years in their Wild West Shows.  Cooley says the manikin in the driver’s seat and the passenger manikin are wearing the original costumes that Bill and Lucille wore in their shows.  Bill recently died, and Cindy Scarborough of Gerry is the custodian of this piece of history... and, loaned it for this event.  The 78th Gerry Rodeo competition continues each night through Saturday with shows beginning at 8 p.m.  For more information.. go on-line to gerryrodeo.org, or call (716) 985-4847.

Borrello proposes legislation that could put more Wind Turbines in NYC area...
A local state lawmaker who has been an opponent to wind turbines has introduced new legislation in Albany.  State Senator George Borrello is proposing that New York City accept turbine installations at a rate equal to that of upstate New York.  Borrello says upstate's landscape... and, Long Island's shoreline are being destroyed by the installations... including farmland, and hills... along with our greenscape.  Borrello argues that there is space available in the Big Apple... in places like Central Park... and, the westside highway.  The Sunset Bay Republican points out that New York City is the largest consumer of energy in the state and the most fossil fuel dependent.

Woman from town of Chautauqua arrested for contempt...
A woman from the town of Chautauqua has been arrested for allegedly sending unwanted text messages to another person.  Sheriff's officers ay 32 year-old Angela Ducuara sent the messages to a person who had a valid order of protection against her.  She was arrested at an undisclosed location about 3:30 p.m. Thursday... and, issued an appearance ticket for Chautauqua Town Court on one count of second-degree criminal contempt.

Ellington Town Picnic gets underway tonight...
Among the many events occurring in the area this weekend is the 110th Ellington Town Picnic at the town square in Ellington.  Programs start tonight and run through Sunday.  The President of the Town Picnic Association, Mat Pickup, says anyone can go, and there is no cost to attend.  Pickup says there is a nominal charge for the children's rides.  The program includes many 'hometown' shows and competitions... including horseshoe pitching, cupcake decorating, wood cutting and many more.  Pickup adds there's entertainment all weekend long, including one up and coming performer at 3 p.m. Saturday - Miranda Wilcox -- a Falconer Central School student who will be performing solo at the picnic.  The Town Picnic Association holds fund raisers all year long, including something new at this weekend's picnic -- commemorative Ellington Town Picnic cold and hot cups.  The cups are $15 and come in a variety of colors. Man from town of Chautauqua arrested on drug trafficking, weapons charges...
A town of Chautauqua man has been arrested after a drug raid turned up quantities of methamphetamine and eight rifles and shotguns.  Sheriff's officers say their narcotics investigators executed a search warrant with the help of Jamestown and Dunkirk Police at 6484 South Portage Rd. just after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.  The Sheriff's Department SWAT Team made entry... and, officers found 32 year-old Jesse Erhard, who was sought on an arrest warrant.  He was taken into custody.  Police also found nearly 60-grams of methamphetamine, 4.3-grams of psilocybin mushrooms, materials for the manufacturing of meth, scales and packaging material for the distribution of narcotics, two hand guns and 8 rifles/shotguns.  They also found $403 in cash.  Erhard was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... second and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon... endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree unlawful manufacturing of methamphetamine... and second-degree criminally using Drug Paraphernalia.  He was taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.

Schumer announces nearly $1-billion more for upstate NY hospitals in Medicare reimbursements...
New York's senior U-S Senator calls it monumental news:  After years of fighting to fix the Medicare wage index... Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer says hospitals in upstate New York will finally get the reimbursements they should have been receiving all along.  During a video press conference Wednesday morning... Schumer announced that the new rate has been approved... and, will be in place going forward... resulting in another $1-billion coming to those health care facilities.  He says the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced the new rule this week.  Schumer says the move should alleviate the problem of chronic doctor and nursing shortages in the upstate region.  He says it good news for the hospital employees... and, the communities they serve.  Among the upstate areas... Schumer says the Western New York region will receive another $170-million a year... and, UPMC Chautauqua Hospital in Jamestown will get $9.8-million of that.  Brooks-TLC in Dunkirk is receiving $3.4-million more.  

Deputy Jamestown Fire Chief hopes to have second ambulance by late Fall...
The head of the Jamestown Fire Department says he's hopeful the city will take delivery of it's new, second ambulance by late Fall of this year.  Deputy Fire Chief Matt Coon says current delivery times have ranged from two to six-months.  City Council this week approved purchase of the vehicle for just under $218,000 from Western New York Bus Parts of Elma, New York.  Coon says the availability of ambulances is still a bit of an issue -- due mainly to computer chips for the vehicle's chassis.  The City Council approved allocating the $248,000 total for the purchase and outfitting of the ambulance.  Meantime... the five newest recruits for the city Fire Department are in Montour Falls for their scheduled training during the Fall session. 

City couple arrested on warrants, domestic charges...
A Jamestown man faces several charges after allegedly being found at a home on the city's northside early Wednesday afternoon with a woman who had an order of protection against him.  City police were called to the location just after 12 p.m. on a report of a wanted person being there.  Officers say they spotted the suspect... 30 year-old Andrew Butts... in the home's backyard.  Police say they found that Butts was with a female resident who was also sought on an active bench warrant from city court.  They tried to stop both... but, they fled into the residence.  The woman was found in the attic hiding inside a cardboard box... while Butts was found hiding in an attic crawl space.  Police say they took both people into custody, and taken to the city lock up pending arraignment.

City police identify Ellicott man as suspect in Monday night robbery at Kwik Fill station...
A man from the town of Ellicott is accused of holding up the Kwik Fill station at the corner of Washington Street and Fluvanna Avenue in Jamestown with a handgun early Monday night.  City police say they were called to the scene of the armed robbery just before 6 p.m., and, found that the male suspect had brandished the gun inside... and, stole money before fleeing the scene.  Officers say with the assistance of Ellicott Town Police... and numerous tips...  the suspect -- 33 year-old James Hayes -- was later found and taken into custody without further incident.  He's being held in the city jail on charges including first-degree robbery... and second-degree Grand Larceny and menacing.

City man arrested for allegedly hitting domestic victim in head with plastic bottle...
A Jamestown man has been arrested for allegedly hitting a person who had an order of protection against him in the head multiple times with a plastic bottle at a supermarket on the city's northside.  Jamestown police were called to the Tops Market at 2000 Washington St. about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday for a domestic dispute.  Officers say their investigation found that 66 year-old Patrick Liberte had struck the person during an argument.  Liberte was arrested on charges including first-degree criminal contempt... second-degree harassment... and aggravated family offense.  He was jailed pending arraignment.

Chamber reschedules Congressional Breakfast with Rep. Langworthy...
The Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce has announced the rescheduling of its annual Congressional Breakfast with Representative Nick Langworthy. It will be the Western New York Republican's first appearance before the chamber since becoming a House member in January. Chamber President and CEO Dan Heitzenrater says the event is set for Wednesday, Aug. 30th at Shorewood Country Club in Dunkirk.  Heitzenrater says the event will begin at 9 a.m.  Heitzenrater says Langworthy is the third House member to attend the event since his involvement with organization.  Heitzenrater is encouraging Chamber members and guests to attend the breakfast.  For more information, contact the chamber.

Ellicott crashes send three to hospital...
Two people are being treated for serious injuries after their motorcycle was stuck by a car late Monday afternoon on Fairmount Ave. in West Ellicott.  Town police say both the car and motorcycle were traveling west -- near Glidden Ave. -- shortly after 4 p.m. when the car reportedly clipped the bike.  Officers say the operator of the motorcycle... 25 year-old Vincent Brigiotta of Jamestown... and his passenger... 24 year-old Sierra Rishel also of Jamestown... were taken to UPMC Chautauqua Hospital.  Both were then taken to UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pennsylvania.  The driver of the car, 19 year-old Nija Slater-Hawkins of Jamestown, was not hurt.  No charges have not been filed... but, the investigation is continuing.

A second accident about mid-morning Tuesday in West Ellicott sent one person to the hospital with minor injuries.  Town police say it occured just after 9 a.m. on Fairmount Ave. -- near Butts -- when one vehicle rear ended another. 

Celoron Village Board approves four contract to begin replacing burned-out Highway Garage...
It's been two years already, and it'll be another year for the replacement to be built, but the village of Celoron is finally set to get a new highway garage.  The village board Monday agreed to a set of four contracts for a new structure to be built on Gifford Avenue on the site of the old garage which was substantially damaged by fire on Aug. 28 of 2021.  Mayor Scott Schrecengost is relieved to finally have plans in place, saying it's been rough for the village workers to do ordinary tasks with no full garage.  Schrecengost says their temporary building only has two bays, and they've had to get temporary storage for their smaller equipment.  The mayor says the insurer originally wanted to fix the burned out facility, but no contractor could be found to take the job.  That led to months of delay. 

The 78th Gerry Rodeo begins tonight...
Fans attending the Gerry Rodeo... which opens tonight... can be assured of a good show.  That's the opinion of Greg Simas, a seasoned observer of the sport, who's back in Gerry for a 14th year as the the show announcer.  Simas notes a young performer from Louisiana who competed in Gerry last year. His name is Kade Sonnier, and he was here for four-days last year... and he is now  second-ranked in the world standings this year.  Simas also says Gerry will have one of the largest groups of competitors ever in the 78 year history of the local rodeo.  Rodeo Spokesman Paul Cooley says there will be 215 professional cowboys and cowgirls from 24 states... who have signed up to compete for more than $50,000 in prize money.  Shows run every night Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m.

Residents warned about spoof e-mail saying it's from County Executive...
People who may regularly get an email from County Executive P.J. Wendel are urged to NOT go out and buy gift cards.  The executive's office Monday alerted the public that Wendel was the victim of a 'spoof' email... someone disguising themselves as someone else.  The phony messages apparently urged recipients to buy gift cards that were supposedly for county employees who'd done good work.  The message said Wendel couldn't get them himself because he was in a meeting.  Any email that claims to be from the executive, but begins with 'info.privatemailboard52' is fake and should be deleted and reported.
