International Humanitarian Law Roundtable ends with resolution, and push to create "ad hoc" tribunal to try Russia for crimes in Ukraine...
Russia has committed numerous violations of the international rule of law during it's bloody, six-month invasion and war in Ukraine... but, the act of aggression is the worst of them.  That was part of the final statement of principles from the 14th International Humanitarian Law Roundtable that concluded Tuesday at Chautauqua Institution.  The Roundtable's Chairwoman... past Chief Prosecutor for the International Criminal Court, Fatu Bensuda... says the current situation in Ukraine led to a lively two-days.  Bensuda says "people really were very engaged" and bringing their expertise to bear.  However... it was telling when the international prosecutors on hand agreed that existing law and "mechanisms" are inadequate to prosecute the crime of aggression.  With that... the prosecutors are pushing for the creation of an "ad hoc" tribunal to handle the case against Russia.  Dean of the Case Western Reserve University School of Law, Michael Scharff, says that's because current tribunals don't have the power to do that.  Scharff says that tribunal would have the ability to go after people like Russian President Vladimir Putin... and, his Foreign Affairs Secretary Sergey Lavrov.  Another aspect of the final statement at the roundtable dealt with the use of mercenaries, and how they should be handed by the the International Criminal Court. 

Case Western Law Students get to take part in Humanitarian Roundtable...
A group of law school students at Case Western Reserve University got some "real life" lessons about how international law is developed and used during the roundtable at Chautauqua this week.  Law School Dean Michael Scharf says the "repratroiries" have been assisting the international prosecutors in researching ways to deal with crimes of "aggressive war."  Scharf says among the questions they were grappling with was whether to establish an "ad hoc" tribunal to deal with the crime of aggression.  One of the students... Kelsey Shannon... says the experience was "really cool" and fast paced.  But... she says it's been great meeting everyone at the event in a "retreat-like" setting.  There were about 50 people on hand.. so you could meet and talk with everyone.  The repratoiries got hands on experience in assembling the final documents.  Those were all put together... and, then boiled down to one, final document with principle statements the prosecutors signed off on to conclude the roundtable.  In addition to her experience at Chautauqua... Shannon says she also served an internship with Interpol in France earlier in the Summer.

Barge runs aground at Van Buren Point on Lake Erie...
A large barge ran aground near Van Buren Point on Lake Erie overnight after breaking loose from a tug boat that was towing it.  Petty Officer Faba of the Coast Guard's 9th District in Cleveland, Ohio says the incident happened about 1:30 this morning... when they were notified that a tug boat was towing a barge when it ran aground.  Faba says they're been trying to break the vessel free, and pollution control crews are on scene as "refloat efforts" are underway.  The 200-foot barge belongs to a Michigan company.

Times Square in NYC will become a "Gun Free Zone" Thursday...
New York City will begin posting signs proclaiming the iconic tourist destination Times Square as a ``Gun Free Zone.''  The 25-block business district in the center of Manhattan is arguably the busiest in the United States.  Under a sweeping new state gun law that goes into effect this Thursday... it would be one of scores of ``sensitive'' places, including parks, churches and theaters that would be off limits for guns.  The new rules are meant to address a U.S. Supreme Court decision that further expanded Second Amendment gun rights when it invalidated a century-old law that required gun owners to prove they had a compelling need to carry.

Investigators say garage fire in Busti caused by lighting strike...
A lighting strike during Monday's severe thunderstorms triggered a garage fire on the Big Tree-Sugar Grove Road in the town of Busti.  That from Chautauqua County Fire Investigators... who were called to the scene once the blaze was out.  Busti firefighters were initially called to the location... between Northrup and Kortwright Roads... about 3 p.m.  Several other New York and Pennsylvania companies were called in to assist.  The investigation determined the fire originated in the garage roof due to the lightning strike.  No injuries were reported.

Man injured when motorcycle strikes downed tree during storm in Jamestown...
A motorcyclist escaped serious injuries in Jamestown yesterday afternoon when his bike struck a tree that had been knocked down near Jamestown Community College.  City police say they were called to the scene at Buffalo Street and Prendergast Avenue about 2:45 p.m. on a report of a motocycle hitting a tree in the roadway.  Police arrived... and the rider was taken to UPMC Chautauqua Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.  No charges were filed.

City Council approves additional ARPA funding to boost housing, business, and neighborhood stablization...
City lawmakers in Jamestown have approved about $3.3-million in additional American Rescue Plan Act funding for various housing, and other projects.  The City Council last night unanimously approved four measures involved... while tabling a fifth.  Council President Tony Dolce says the biggest pot of money... $2-million... is for the Healthy Communities and Neighborhoods Program to help with various private property upgrades and repairs.  Dolce says they weren't sure how much would be needed initially... but, soon found that money was spent quickly.  In addition... lawmakers also approved another $1-million for the Building and Infrastructure program.  Dolce says both actually had long waiting lists of people in line for some funding after the intial monies ran out.  He says the people who were told they would be covered under additional, pending funding should get it this time around.  The ARPA program that was tabled would have created a 750-thousand dollar program for neighborhood stabilization under a "19-A" program.  However... Dolce says some questions arose... and, that information is still being scrutinized.  The third item using ARPA funding approved last night would use $174,000 for concrete work by Signature Paving and Sealcoating on Gwendolin Avenue... and, the fourth was $133,000 to help replace the Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department roof.

The annual Labor Day Festival is coming up next Sunday at Bergman Park.  With that... city lawmakers last night also approved spending $19,500 for the fireworks that will conclude the program.  The pyrotechnics will be provided by Zambelli Fireworks from New Castle, Pa. 

Dolce announces final details on public safety and neighborhood forum... 
Details have now been finalized for the Sept. 14 public safety and housing forum to be hosted by Council President Tony Dolce.  At the end of last night's monthly meeting... Dolce announced the session will be held at Darrah Hall at Christ First United Methodist Church on Lakeview Avenue beginning at 6:30 p.m.  The Second-Ward representative says holding the forum has taken on more importance with the fatal drive-by shooting on Prendergast Avenue earlier this month.  He says Police Chief Timothy Jackson will first provide an update on that investigation, and other safety issues... and, city Development Director Crystal Surdyk will give a brief presentation after that on Wednesday, Sept. 14.  The public is welcome to attend.  Dolce says Surdyk will be at the forum to discuss housing and neighborhood issues.  He anticipates the program running until about 8 p.m. or shortly after.

Hochul announces $10-million for counties to do Mass Shooting threat assessments...
Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that she has made $10-million available to all 57 counties... and, New York City to support the development of Threat Assessment and Management Teams.  Hochul says those are a key component of local Domestic Terrorism Prevention Plans required under Executive Order 18.  The Executive Order was issued by Hochul in the immediate aftermath of the mass shooting in Buffalo last May 18, and, is designed to fight the troubling surge in domestic terrorism and violent extremism frequently inspired by, planned on, and posted about on social media platforms and internet forums. 

Well-known Jamestown piano teacher/instructor Helga Hulse passes at age 100...
One the Jamestown area's most well-known piano teachers and performers has died.  Helga Hulse passed away last Saturday at the age of 100.  Helga spent more than 50 years in Jamestown teaching piano to thousands of children and adults at her private studio.  Her enthusiasm for the area and its musicians was irrepressible, as demonstrated in an interview with our Dennis Webster in 2011 when she was planning to move south to be closer to family.  She said she had a "wonderful life" in Jamestown... and, her time away only lasted a year or so.  She missed Jamestown so much, she moved back home.  The family has announced a memorial service for Helga Hulse at 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1st Lutheran Church in Jamestown.  The Lind Funeral Home is handling arrangements.  

Jamestown, Chautauqua Co. public safety officials report some damage, outages from thunderstorm...
Crews from the Jamestown Public Works, and Board of Public Utilities, have been busy this late today after a severe, mid-afternoon thunderstorm roared through the city.  Jamestown Police say the traffic light at Fluvanna Avenue and Washington Street was out late Monday afternoon... and, there are multiple reports of trees or large limbs down on houses across the city.  The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department dispatcher center also reported scattered outages... and, trees down on home... but, nothing significant at this time.  No injuries have been reported.

Two men hurt when their Glider crashes in Mayville...
Two men escaped serious injury after the glider they were riding in crashed into some trees as they tried to land in an open field in the town of Chautauqua.  Sheriff's officers were called to the scene of a plane crash on North Erie Street -- in Mayville -- about 1:30 p.m. last Saturday, and, found the glider with the two men already out of the glider.  Deputies say 56 year-old Galo Grijalva of Lakewood, and his passenger, 60 year-old Douglas Sillart of Derby were both treated for non-life threatening injuries at the scene.  No charges have been filed... but the Sheriff's Office and the Federal Aviation Administration are continuing to investigate.

Silver Creek man arrested for criminal mischief following fight early Friday...
A north county man has been arrested for criminal mischief following altercation early last Friday morning in the village of Silver Creek.  Sheriff's officers were called to a locaton on Lafayette street for the alleged fight just after 4 a.m.  When deputies investigated... the found that 52 year-old Christopher Domenico of Silver Creek had committed fourth-degree criminal mischief.  Domenico was taken into custody... and, taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.

International Humanitarian Law Roundtable begins today...
The 14th International Humanitarian Law Roundtable... formerly known as the International Humanitarian Law Dialogs... get underway at Chautauqua Institution today.  The program will feature a number of current and past international prosecutors who have tried a number of 'crimes against humanity' cases since World War II.  The Robert H. Jackson Center helps put on the program... and, Center President Kristan McMahon calls it a unique event because it's the only event of it's kind in the world.  The two-day program kicked off with a "welcome event" at the Jackson Center where Ambassador Hans Corell received the Joshuan H. Heintz Award for Humanitarian Achievement.  Corell was Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and the Legal Counsel of the United Nations from March 1994 to March 2004.  Kristan McMahon says this year's program is especially timely... given what's happening in Ukraine.  She says this year's topic is "Tracking Aggression from Nuremburg to Kiev... and, with the nature of the subject, they are asking those who would like to attend to contact the Jackson Center first at 483-6646.  Kristan McMahon made her comments last week on our Dennis Webster Show on WJTN Radio.

Della Pia says he's ready to go with November election campaign...
The Democratic candidate for the 23rd Congressional District seat says he feels energized going into the Fall campaign.  Owego's Max Della Pia says his campaign was "written off by every pollster across the country as a guaranteed Republican blow-out."  However... Della Pia says he finished within 5 or 6 points of Republican winner Joe Sempolinski in last week's Special Election to fill-out the final four months of retired Congressman Tom Reed's term.  Della Pia says "Trump won the district by 15 points in 2016 and 11 points in 2020.  Paladino and Langworthy spent millions of dollars to get out the vote between their campaigns and their dark money supporters.  It’s clear voters are tired of the hyper-partisanship in Congress.  They value a candidate who is looking to find common ground."  Della Pia concluded that the new 23rd District is "winnable."

NYSSBA officials talks Back to School issues for 2022-23 school year...
Many school districts in Chautauqua County begin their Fall classes a week from tomorrow... and, are working to finalize staffing and getting new people trained.  That from New York State School Boards Association Spokesman David Albert... who says this will be the first "normal" opening for district's since the COVID-19 pandemic began.  Albert says district's have American Rescue Plan Act funding to mainly deal with "learning gaps."  He says there are a number of reasons for that -- especially in math and reading skills.  Albert says the school board's group is providing as much information and support to local school boards as they can.  The nationwide teacher shortage has been well-documented.  However... he says in New York state... it's more a lack of bus drivers.  Albert says the teacher shortage seems to be seen mainly in STEM, and other technology courses, and others that tend to be more specialized.  He says that in itself is creating a shortage because demand for them has increase.  David Albert made his comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Media One Radio Group stations.

Two city men now charged in connection with fatal shooting on Prendergast Avenue...
Two Jamestown men taken into custody in connection with last Friday's fatal "targeted" shooting incident on Prendergast Avenue now face a pair of charges.  However... they do not deal directly with the shooting death of 35 year-old Jesus Batista Perez... nor the wounding of another man in the same incident on Prendergast.  Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt confirmed late Thursday that 32 year-old Joseph Fontanez-Walker is now charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and, tampering with evidence.  The other man... 22 year-old Kevin Roldan-Pantojas is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon... a Class C violent felony... and tampering with physical evidence.  Schmidt says bail for Roldan-Pantojas was set at $200,000 cash... $400,000 property bond because the weapon's possession count is a violent Felony.  However... the charges against Fontanez-Walker did not qualify for bail, and under state law, he was released. 

Sempolinski says he's ready to go in Congress...
Fresh off his special election victory Tuesday night... Joe Sempolinski says he is ready to become the 23rd Congressional District's representative for the next four months.  However... Sempolinski tells us that he doesn't know when he will officially begin to fill out Tom Reed's final term.  Sempolinski says House members are not scheduled to return to Washington until Sept. 13, but, he thinks there's a chance the swearing-in could come sooner because there are other Congressional Special Elections where winners need to be sworn-in.  Sempolinski, who will not be running in November, has a lot to do.  Among his first tasks, getting constituent service back up and running.  Then he'll move onto the legislative agenda.  Sempolinski... who is a Steuben County Republican... says he is waiting to hear about his committee assignments. 

State begins accepting applications for marijuana dispensaries...
New York state has started accepting applications to open its first recreational pot shops.  The state is taking a novel approach by reserving the initial roughly 150 retail dispensary licenses for people with past pot convictions or their relatives.  The application process began Thursday... and is a key step toward opening one of the country's most hotly-awaited legal marijuana markets.  There's no firm date yet for sales to begin.  New York officials have emphasized that they want to make sure the new industry provides opportunity to people who bore the brunt of drug law enforcement.

City man arrested on outstanding warrant, and as a parolee absconder...
A Jamestown man wanted on outstanding arrest warrants and for violating his parole has been arreste following a traffic stop on the city's westside last night.  Jamestown police say they pulled over 41 year-old Justin Meacham in the area of Livingston Ave. and Geneva St. about 8:30 p.m. for a traffic violation... and, ran background check.  Officers found city court warrants, and that Meacham was a parole absconder.  When police tried to take him into custody... Meacham ran off and led officers on a short foot chase... then resisted arrest.  He's also accused of trying to destory a quantity of drugs he had.  Meacham was arrested on two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and one count each of tampering with physical evidence...resisting arrest and second-degree obstruction.  He was taken to the city jail pending arraignment.

Co. Legislature approves borrowing for North County water tower project...
Chautauqua County lawmakers on Wednesday unanimously approved a resolution authorizing borrowing money for a project to repair and rehabilitate a water storage tower in the North County Industrial Water District.  Two legislators spoke about the project at a public hearing during the legislature's monthly meeting in Mayville.  Dunkirk's Robert Bankoski says the facility in the Town of Sheridan supports the area's large manufacturers... like Nestle Purina.  Sheridan's Terry Niebel says the county has secured more than $860,000 in American Rescue Plan funds for the project, but it plans to apply for grants that would allow for the repurposing of the federal money at a later date. 

Dunkirk man arrested for assault last weekend...
A Dunkirk man is facing multiple charges after a domestic dispute on Lake Shore Drive West in Dunkirk early Sunday morning. Dunkirk Police say that 24-year-old Austin Burgess allegedly had thrown a female victim to the ground and tried to choke her, and then took the victim's phone when she tried to call 911.  The victim then flagged down a patrol car for assistance.  Burgess is also accused of attempting to obstruct the investigation... and allegedly resisted police when he was being taken into custody.  After being booked... Police say Burgess attempted to tamper with the surveillance system.  He's charged with criminal obstruction of breathing/blood circulation, obstructing governmental administration, criminal mischief and harassment.

F2CS band to hold preview program early this evening...
The members of the F2CS Blue and Gold Vanguard High School marching band are working intensively this week on their fall 2022 show 'Blue Print.'  The band is made up of 40 students from both Falconer and Frewsburg Central schools.  Director, Alicia Laska, says the combined band is in its 6th year of existance... and things are going very well, even with some new staff.  She says it's great now because the kids get along much better than in the beginning.  Alicia's husband, Shaun, is the assistant director of the band... and this year, one of their children, Frewsburg senior Kelson Laska, is one of the drum majors.  The band's preview show will be today at 5:15 p.m.

County lawmakers approve one-year extension of CSEA Contract...
The Chautauqua County Legislature has approved a tentative one-year contract extension with the labor union that represents the majority of county employees.  Lawmakers on Wednesday passed a resolution for the deal with Civil Service Employees Assocaition Local #6300 that runs from January to December 2023.  Sheridan legislator Terry Niebel says the contract includes a 3% wage increase and a one-time bonus for the employees of $750 for about 900 employees.  Niebel says the cost of the extension is about $2.3-million.  He believes it is a fair deal for the employees and county taxpayers.

Dolce announces date for public safety/gun violence forum in Jamestown...
Final details are still being worked on... but, Jamestown City Council President Tony Dolce has now scheduled a public forum on the city's gun violence issue for three weeks from Wednesday.  Dolce made the announcement during the council's Work Session earlier this week.  Dolce says it'll be held on Wednesday night, Sept. 14, and, city officials are being asked to be there.  They would include Police Chief Tim Jackson, and city Development Director Crystal Surdyk to talk specifically about neighborhood, and housing issues.  While there was a lot of discussion about public safety during Monday night's meeting... Dolce says there really isn't enough time during the course of council meetings to address the many concerns.  Monday night's comments came in the wake of the latest shooting in the city last Friday afternoon when one person was killed, and other seriously wounded.

Sempolinski declares victory in Special Election... Langworthy wins GOP Primary...
A former staff member for retired 23rd District Congressman Tom Reed has now claimed victory in the Special Election to fill out the rest of Reed's final term.  Corning's Joe Sempolinski, the Republican and Conservative Party nominee in the race, declared victory late Wednesday morning.  Sempolinski says "it's the honor of a lifetime to be selected by my friends and neighbors to speak for them on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.  I intend to spend my time in Congress fighting for the people that have given me everything in my life. I will work to make sure that the voice of the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes is heard throughout the remainder of this Congressional term."  He received 38,749 votes to Democrat Max Della Pia's 34,001 tallies.  Sempolinski thanked all those who voted in the election, volunteered for the campaign and supported him throughout this entire process, especially his family.

In the Republican Primary for the new 23rd Congressional District... State GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy has won the Republican primary to run this Fall.  Langworthy wound up winning by the same number as was shown early Wednesday morning, 24,275 to 22,283 for Buffalo developer Carl Paladino.  Paladino conceded the race late Wednesday morning.

County elections officials very pleased with higher than expected voter turn-out for special election, and primary...
Turnout for Tuesday's special election and Republican primary in the 23rd Congressional District proved to be much higher than elections officials had anticipated.  Chautauqua County Republican Elections Commissioner Brian Abram says numbers were much greater than the primary contests held in June.  Abram says they saw 13% participation back in June, and they were looking at similar numbers this time.  However... he says they're looking at something "in the mid 20s."  Meanwhile, Abram says the Board of Elections is now beginning the process of reconciling the ballots... namely affidavit and absentee ballots with the state Board of Elections.  He says that's to ensure no one could cast "multiple votes."  Abram says because of the higher than expected turnout, there were delays at some of the poll sites.

Farmer Neighbor Awards handed out in Ellington...
Several awards were conferred at the fifth-annual Chautauqua County Farmer-Neighbor Dinner... held Tuesday night at the Grandview of Ellington.  The organizing committee named the Carlberg Farm from just south of Jamestown as 'Farm of the Year.'  Ginny Carlberg, accepted the award.  She says it's really an honor to receive the award, and was a surprise.  The dairy the farm part of the business dates back to 1904.  The family added a produce operation in 2018.  The 'Friend of Agriculture' award went to Robert Cross and family of 3 C's Catering.  Cross took the business from dairying to catering in 1996.  The Farmer-Neighbor Committee named Steve Kimball of Kennedy as 'Legacy Producer.'  The Soil and Water Conservation District presented its annual 'Environmental Management' award to the Dunnewold Farms of French Creek.   

Sempolinski winner of Special Election, Langworthy now declared winner of GOP Primary...
A former staff member for retired Congressman Tom Reed has pulled out a victory to fill-out the final four-months of his former bosses seat.  With nearly 100% of the vote tallied by this morning... Corning Republican Joe Sempolinki had the lead over Owego Democrat Max Della Pia with nearly 53% of the vote to Della Pia's 46%.  Della Pia tells us he's "very proud" of the effort by his campaign... which visited Chautauqua County a handful of times during the campaign.  Sempolinski won Chautauqua County with 8,039 votes to Della Pia's 5,413.  Della Pia says he'll continue pushing his message of Congress needing to work together better... and, hopes that resonates with voters in November election.

In the Republican Primary for the new 23rd Congressional District... nothing was decided last night.  However... with 99% of the vote now in... State GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy leads Carl Paladino by nearly 2,000 votes.  The A-P declared Langworthy the winner early this morning... and, a Buffalo TV station now reports that Paladino has conceded the primary election.

Two men and two teenaged boys arresed for being in possession of drugs, and switchblade knife...
Two Jamestown men and two 17 year-old boys have been arrested for allegedly being in possession of illegal drugs and a switchblade knife following a Monday afternoon drug raid.  City police say members of the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at an apartment with the help of the JPD SWAT Team at 27 Stowe St. about 4 p.m.  They found 23 year-old Jovian Maisonet... 18 year-old Jaquez Thomas... and, the two juveniles inside... along with a quantity of crack cocaine, cocaine, items used for the packaging and distribution of drugs, a quantity of cash -- believed to be the proceeds of drug sales, and a
switchblade knife.  Both Maisonet and Thomas were arrested... and, charged with third-and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia... and, fourth-degree criminal Possession of a Weapon.  Maisonet was also arrested on multiple warrants... including one for robbery.  Police say the juveniles were released to a guardian – additional charges are expected to be filed in the future.  If you have any information about illegal drug activity... call the JPD Tips line at 483-TIPS... that's 483-8477.

City man arrested for allegedly attacking Mayville Library employee Tuesday night...
A Jamestown man is under arrest after allegedly assaulting an employee of the Mayville Library early last night with a knife.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to the scene at 92 South Erie St. about 7 p.m.  Their investigation determined that 20 year-old Xavier Guadarrama assaulted the worker... and then fled the scene before deputies arrived.  After a brief search of the area... officers found and arrested Guadarrama on one count of first-degree attempted assault... fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and, second-degree menacing.  They say Guadarrama was also found to be wanted on a probation warrant... and, he was taken to the county jail pending arraignment.

Erie, Pa. man arrested after his car collides with an Amish buggy in Sherman...
Two people riding in an Amish buggy were taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after a car that was exiting Interstate 86 in Sherman struck the buggy.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to the scene at Exit 6 after the westbound vehicle... driven by Naresh Venkatesan of Erie, Pennsylvania... failed to stop at the stop sign with Osborn St.  The car then struck the buggy... which was northbound on Osborn.  The two people on the buggy were taken to Westfield Memorial Hospital for treatment of their injuries.  Officers say the horse was not injured as a result of the accident.  Venkatesan was ticketed for failure to stop at a stop sign and is scheduled to appear in Sherman Town Court at a later date.

Jamestown man arrested for allegedly being in possession of guns with child nearby in home...
A Jamestown man has been arrested for allegedly being in possession of two shotguns in the presence of an unsupervised, 3-year-old child.  City police say they were called to an eastside address about 10:30 a.m. Monday for a reported drug overdose.  They began treating the victim... and, then spotted a shotgun in the living room.  Police say they then found the 3-year-old in a room with another shotgun within reach.  Officers they arrested 52 year-old Thomas Kimbrough, Sr. on one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and, endangering the welfare of a child.  Kimbrough was arraigned and released on his own recognizance.  The investigation is continuing and more charges are expected.

City of Jamestown launches new disk golf course at Bergman Park...
The city of Jamestown's new, disc golf course has officially opened in Bergman Park... with 12 holes currently in play.  City officials say another six holes are to be added next Spring.  Parks Manager Dan Stone says the course utilizes many of the underused open areas of the park, as well as some of the wooden areas around the back of Bergman Park.  Stone says they were put in about a month and a half ago with the help of the Twin Tiers Disk Golf Club, which will be holding a kid's clinic there on Aug. 30.  Stone says they're "excited to offer more recreational opportunities to residents.  Having a high-quality disc golf course only enhances what we provide to residents and will draw in people from all over the region to play.”  Stone adds that a map and the ability to keep track of scoring can be found on-line at udisc.com/courses/bergman-park-x3mX. 

Two arrested in connection with last Friday's fatal, drive-by shooting in Jamestown...
Two Jamestown men have been arrested in connection with last Friday afternoon's drive-by shooting that left one person dead... and, another seriously wounded.  City Police Chief Timothy Jackson told members of the City Council's Public Safety Committee about the arrests of 32 year-old Joseph Fontanez-Walker... and, 22 year-old Kevin Roldan-Pantojas late Monday.  That from Committee Chairman Brent Sheldon... who says JPD Chief Timothy Jackson informed the committee about the arrests, which occured just prior to the meeting.  Jackson says they are working with the District Attorney's Office on the charges.  The shooting in the 800-block of Prendergast Avenue left 35 year-old Jesus Batista-Perez dead... and, a second, unidentified man, wounded.  Police add that the black Toyota four-door sedan that was previously posted has been located.  If you have any information on the incident... call JPD at 483-7537... or the confidential tips line at 483-8477.

City Council members react to, and discuss what to do about gun violence uptick in city...
Last Friday's fatal, daylight shooting incident led to much discussion about the issue of gun violence in the city of Jamestown... and what to do about it.  While lawmakers recently agreed to hire more police officers to put on the streets to deal with the situation... resident Doug Champ criticized council and Mayor Eddie Sundquist for waiting about a year to start doing something with American Rescue Plan Act funds.  Champ urged using more of what's left over of ARPA funds -- about 20% -- for public safety.  He says if there's $10-million in funding left... they should put at least $2-million towards public safety.  At-Large Councilman Jeff Russell... a retired city police officer... says he's "frustrated" by the situation.  Russell feels there needs to be more work done at the neighborhood-level using "zero tolerance" to make it uncomfortable for the drug and gun traffickers.  A "zero tolerance" program was used... often successfully some years back... to put more heat on those involved in criminal activity to get them off the streets.  While he believes some bail reform was needed... Russell said he was also frustrated because it went "too far."

Special Election and GOP Primary Day underway in 23rd Congressional District...
Chautauqua County Elections commissioners say that early voting for Tuesday's Special Election and Republican primary for the 23rd Congressional District seat went better than expected.  That from Republican Commissioner Brian Abram... who says 1,670 voters took part in the Special Election between Republican Joe Sempolinski... and, Democrat Max Della Pia.  Abram adds that 585 took part in the GOP Primary... but, added those voters had to be registered Republicans.  He says that early voting allowed poll workers to work out the kinks... and, voters responded.  In fact... he says turn-out was even better than the gubernatorial primaries in June... when 900 people voted early.  Democratic Elections Commissioner Luz Torres says early voting ended Sunday... and, the actual Special Election and primary day is Tuesday.  Torres says poll will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and, all 49 of the county's polling sites will be open.  She and Brian Abram say ALL voters will receive a ballot for the Special Election.  If your a Republican... you will also receive a ballot for the GOP Primary.

Hochul says new COVID guidelines get children back into school...
Circumstances have changed a lot since last year... and, with that Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that New York State will be easing COVID guidelines for schools this Fall.  During a briefing on COVID-19 and monkeypox in New York City Monday... Hochul said the state will be aligning its guidance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention before the start of the school year to make sure kids are in the classroom.  Hochul says there's "no replacement for in-classroom learning."  She says the changes include ending "test to stay" and full-class quarantining.  She says children who come in contact with someone who tested positive... but, don't show symptoms... and, stay in class with a mask on.  Hochul says... with the new guidelines... an entire classroom will not be sent home.  She adds that the state will once again launch its "vax to school" program.

Ashville mobile home damaged by fire...
Firefighters from several departments responded to a trailer fire on the Carpenter-Pringle Road near Ashville early Monday morning.  Chautauqua County Sheriff's dispatchers say Ashville firefighters got the call around 12:30 a.m., and, received mutual aid from Panama, Bemus Point, Lakewood, Chautauqua, Sherman, Ellery Center and County Emergency Services.  No injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

JHS Band learning fall's show, and preparing for preview program this Friday...
The official opening of school is still a couple of weeks away.  But the Jamestown High School Marching Band is already busy learning this fall’s show...'Lunar Odyssey.'  Band Director Meghan Murray says they are using a new tool to teach the marching part of the show.  It’s called‘Ultimate Drillbook’ which is an app that can be downloaded, and shows the students where they need to go.  Some phones were donated to make sure every student had one.  The app replaces the old-style, spiral-bound index cards.  Murray says there’s an opportunity to see the band’s progress later this week on Friday night, Aug. 26 at 8 p.m. and is open and free to the public.  The Fall Festival of Bands, with seven performing groups, will be held at Strider Field on Sat., Sept. 17.

One person has been killed... and, another wounded in a daylight shooting in the middle of the 800-block of Prendergast Avenue in Jamestown.  Few details have been released... but, police were called to the scene shortly after 1 PM.  There was still a heavy police presence at mid-afternoon as investigators combed over the area.  There was a white sedan with blood showing on the driver's side... and, a covered body on the street.  Chief Timothy Jackson confirms the fatality... and, says the shooting appears to have been targeted.  Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Jamestown Police Department at 483-7537 or the JPD Tip Line at 483-8477.  They say all tips are confidential.  The person wounded was taken to a regional hospital.  No arrests have been reported.  More when it becomes available.

Matar indicted by Chautauqua County Grand Jury, pleads not guilty in Rushdie stabbing...
The man accused of stabbing famed author Salman Rushdie as he was about to give a lecture at Chautauqua Institution has now been formally arraigned on an attempted murder charge.  The A--P and ABC News say 24 year-old Hadi Matar of Fairview, New Jersey pled not guilty to a charge of second-degree attempted murder in county court Thursday... after an indictment was handed up by the county Grand jury.  The A--P is also reporting that Judge David Foley denied bail for Matar... who was arrested after he rushed the stage at the institution last Friday morning.  He then stabbed Rushdie several times in front of a horrified crowd.  Rushdie is 75, and is getting treatment at an Erie, Pennsylvania hospital for severe wounds.  During the court hearing, public defender Nathaniel Barone asked Foley to do something to stop reporters from trying to contact Matar at the county jail.  Barone says the jail had received ``several hundred phone calls.''  Foley issued a gag order in the case.

Chautauqua instituting more security measures in wake of attack on Rushdie...
Chautauqua Institution is continuing to beef up security following last Friday's attack on author Salman Rushdie in the amphitheater.  That from Chautauqua Spokesperson Vanessa Weinert... who says there's now a 'no bags' policy in place, and all gate passes and tickets now require identification.  Weinert says another major move is now in effect... that being use of metal detecting technology at some venues.  Weinert says Chautauquans have been very supportive of the Institution following last week's incident... echoing what President Michael Hill said after it occured.  She says "we have to reclaim the podiums and pulpits with programming that meets the ideals of Chautauqua and Salman Rushdie."  Chautauqua's nine week season comes to a close a week from Sunday on Sun. Aug. 28.

Missing girl in Mina got stuck in thick brush...
The 6 year-old girl who went missing just over an hour in the Findley Lake area was found safe and sound in the Route 430 area after getting stuck in a thick area of brush.  Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday... and, conducted a preliminary search of the buildings on the property.  Sheriff's K-9 "Link" was then deployed on an area search.  After about an hour of searching... the K-9 located picked up an 'odor trail' and began tracking into a wooded area.  The dog found the girl stuck in the brush about half-a-mile from her home.  She was uninjured and returned to her family.  Sheriff's deputies were assisted by State Forest Rangers, the Findley Lake and Sherman Fire Departments... and county EMS.

TRC to Open first ever retail location, "CHQ Plus..."
The Resource Center will soon be opening its first ever retail location… in the Wellman Building in downtown Jamestown.  TRC’s Director of Employment and Community Services, Terri Johnson, says the store will be called ‘CHQ Plus.'  Johnson says they'll be selling items either man by locatl residents, or people with disabilities.  ‘CHQ Plus’ will also help the Resource Center prepare persons with disabilities to enter the workforce by giving them training in a retail setting.  The exact opening date for the store has not been set.   ‘CHQ Plus’ is a collaborative project of the Resource Center, the county Chamber of Commerce, and the Gebbie Foundation.

County Airport near Jamestown to celebrate 90th birthday this weekend...
The Chautauqua County Airport near Jamestown will celebrate its 90th anniversary this weekend with two special events.  Airports Manager, Shannon Barnhart, says the first will be an outdoor showing of the Disney movie ‘Planes’ tonight at dusk, around 8:15 p.m., on a knoll outside one of the hangers.  Barnhart says the movie is free.  Popcorn and drinks will be sold to benefit a couple of not for profit organizations.  The other special event is a Three-C’s pancake breakfast Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the terminal building.  The cost is $15 person, $8 for children 12 and under.  Airport historian, and pilot, Mike Johnson, says the official grand opening of the Jamestown field was held on Aug.t 20, 1932.

Schumer sounds alarm on Spotted Lanternfly being seen in upstate New York, need for federal effort to eradicate...
Nearly every region of upstate New York has now reported seeing the invasive Spotted Lanternfly putting crops and wineries at risk.  That from U.S. Senator Charles Schumer... who says the U.S. Department of Agriculture needs to deploy federal funds he's secured for the state to educate the public and eradicate the insect.  The New York Democrat is also pushing an additional $22-million in the upcoming budget for the state's Integrated Pest Management Program.  While the Spotted Lanternfly has not been reported in Chautauqua County so far... Schumer says it's now being reported in the Finger Lakes... Southern Tier... Central New York... the Hudson Valley... and, Capital Regions.

Abram says more than 700 had voted by Tuesday night...
More than 700 people have voted through the first four-days of early voting for the special election... and, Republican Primary for the 23rd Congressional District.  The special election... between Republican Joe Sempolinski and Democrat Max Della Pia... is to fill out the remainder of former Congressman Tom Reed's final term.  The winner of the Republican Primary... between state GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy and Buffalo-area developer Carl Paladino... will face Della Pia in the general election in November.  But... even with two contests to vote on, county Republican Elections Commissioner Brian Abram says far more Democrats have voted so far.  In fact, he said the numbers were about 2-to-1 Democrat so far.  Abram emphasizes that you must be a registered Republican to be able to vote in both contests.  If you are not a Republican... you will just get one ballot.  Early voting resumes later today at the Chautauqua Mall in Lakewood... the Jackson Center in Jamestown... the County Fairgrounds in Dunkirk... and, the county Board of Elections Office in Mayville.  You can early vote now through Sunday.  Next Tuesday is Primary and Special Election Day... with voting beginning at 6 a.m..  For more information... go to VoteChautauqua.com.

Two arrested for burglazing home in town of Harmony...         
Two people have been arrested for allegedly breaking into a home in the town of Harmony early this past Monday morning.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to the scene on the Blockville-Watts Flats Rd. just after 4 a.m., for a "burglary in progress."  When they arrived... they saw the two suspects running from the scene into a nearby creek.  Deputies were soon after able to find 23 year-old Cora Waddington of Frewsburg, and 26 year-old Devin Fuller of Jamestown, hiding nearby and took them into custody.  Both are accused of entering the home and starting to remove items from inside.  The homeowner who was not home at the time... was contacted and able to recover the property that was being removed.  Waddington and Fuller are both charged with third-degree burglary... third-degree Grand Larceny... and, second-degree obstruction.  Both were taken to the county jail pending arraignment.

Late afternoon thunderstorm Wednesday leads to flash flooding, some damage as well...
A sudden, heavy thunderstorm in the immediate Jamestown area late Wednesday afternoon produced strong downpours, lightning... and, even hail.  Observers say the storm struck shortly after 4 p.m., and, knocked down a power pole, and lines on Chandler Street in Jamestown.  City police say the Board of Public Utilities responded to make repairs.  There was also some flooding reported on Second Street... and other parts of the downtown area.  The hail was seen in downtown Jamestown.  No other issues were reported.  However... the storm did knock WJTN-AM radio off the air for several hours.

City man arrested for illegal gun possession...
A Jamestown man has been arrested for illegally possessing a loaded firearm following a traffic stop on the city's northside.  Jamestown police say a patrolman stopped 21 year-old Wilfredo Rivera-Vazquez in the area of Spring and Crossman Streets just before 4 a.m. Wednesday... and, conducted a search.  Officers say the loaded gun was found soon after... and, Rivera-Vazquez was arrested without incident.  Police say he was taken to the city jail on charges of second-and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, along with other traffic violations.

Six-year-old girl found stuck in brush after going missing...
A multi-agency search last night in the southwestern portion of Chautauqua County resulting in them locating a 6-year-old girl who had gone missing earlier in the evening.  The Sheriff's Department dispatch center says the girl -- who was not identified -- was reported missing shortly before 8 p.m. in the area of Route 430 in the town of Mina.  She was found about an hour later, struck in some thick brush, but, unhurt about an hour later.

Two arrested on weapons, and warrants following gunshot complaint...
One person has been arrested for allegedly firing a gunshot at an occupied car... and, another on multiple warrants during a drug raid at a nearby home on Jamestown's northside.  City police were called to a report of shots fired at 810 Washington St. shortly after 12 a.m. Tuesday.  Responding officers found that 35 year-old Joshua Hammer had fired one round from a stolen handgun at the car, which was parked in the driverway in front of the home.  Further investigation led to the raid by the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force on the home itself.  Inside... they found the stolen handgun and a set of brass knuckles.  Police also found 42 year-old Larry Whitehill, Jr. of Jamestown, who was wanted on city court warrants... and, another from Chester County, Pennsylvania.  Hammer is jailed pending arraignment on charges including two counts each of first-degree reckless endangerment, and second-degree menacing... as well as second-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and, fourth-degree possession of stolen property.  Whitehill is also being held as a fugitive from justice.

City man arrested last Fall pleads guilty to federal narcotics charge...
A Jamestown man arrested in recent months for allegedly trafficking drugs has now pleaded guilty to a federal charge for selling large amounts of Fentanyl in the area.  U.S. Attorney Trini Ross has announced that 47 year-old Denver Komenda entered the plea before Federal Judge Richard Arcara in Buffalo to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute, 400 grams or more of fentanyl.  Prosecutors say that last October, investigators went to a Locust Street home in Jamestown to arrest a fugitive there.  When they arrived, they encountered Komenda, who gave permission for a search of the residence.  Investigators did not find the fugitive but discovered and seized a bag of fentanyl in Komenda’s bedroom.  Ross says the charge carries a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison, a maximum of life, and a fine of $10-million.

Borrello and Goodell call for special session of state legislature to act on Peace Officer Status for public safety employees at Chaut. Institution...
Chautauqua County's two members of the New York state legislature are calling on Governor Hochul to convene a special session to pass legislation that would strengthen security at Chautauqua Institution.  The legislation... sponsored by State Senator George Borrello and Assemblyman Andy Goodell... would boost security at Chautauqua by granting ‘peace officer’ status to the organization’s public safety personnel.  Borrello says their advocacy comes in the wake of the -- "brutal and unprovoked attack on (Salmon) Rushdie... which has been a devastating reminder that violence and evil have no boundaries."  They say it would enable institution safety personnel to make arrests, use physical force if necessary, and issue appearance and traffic tickets. 

Current Harmony Town Highway Superintendent named to be new county DPF Director...
Chautauqua County will have a new Public Facilities Director the day after Labor Day... and, he's a life long resident of the county.  County Executive P.J. Wendel Tuesday announced that he's appointed current Harmony Town Highway Superintendent Timothy Card to replace Brad Bentley, who resigned from the position last December.  Wendel says Card brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to handle the job... totaling 30-plus years employed doing public works jobs, and as town highway superintendent beginning when he was first elected in 1996.  Wendel says Card will be responsible for overseeing the operations of seven different divisions of the Department of Public Facilities... including roads and bridges... solid waste... the county's airports and the CARTS Bus system.  Card says he's "honored" to accept the appointment.  He's not an engineer, but, can do the job now after a restructuring of the DPF.  Card earned his certification in Construction and Heavy Equipment at the Hewes Center at Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES in Ashville.  He graduated from the Panama Central Schools, and now resides in Ashville. 

Ortolano identifies victims of last week's double-fatal crash in Dunkirk...
The investigation into last week's double-fatal car crash near the corner of Central and Howard Avenues in the city of Dunkirk is ongoing.  That from Dunkirk Police Chief David Ortolano... who says the Chautauqua County Coroner's Office has identified the two victims who died in the Aug. 11 crash.  Orotolano says they are 23 year-old Luis Perez-Torres, and 17 year-old Eric Rodriguez-Montalvo -- both of Dunkirk.  He says the accident remains under investigation, and they are still putting together all of the facts, including information from accident reconstruction and witness statements.

New ‘BOLD’ program ready to launch at SUNY JCC...
With the fall semester about to begin at Jamestown Community College and the SUNY College at Fredonia, the new BOLD program is set to launch.  BOLD stands for ‘Bachelor’s Opportunities... Locally Delivered.’  It allows students to complete a Fredonia degree by attending classes solely at Jamestown Community College.  JCC’s Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Kirk Young, says the response to BOLD has been good -- mainly for the business administration program.  Young says those students are "very excited" about the chance to get the 4-year degree while living in the Jamestown area.  Dr. Young says JCC's Director of Education, Dr. Renee Funke, has been busy all summer with inquiries about the second BOLD program... a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education.  Fredonia professors will come to JCC in Jamestown to teach the BOLD classes. They’ll be sent by ‘live link’ to the Cattaraugus County Campus in Olean. 

Langworthy rallies standing room only gathering in Lakewood...
With a week to go before Republican primary day for the new 23rd Congressional District... one of the two major candidates in the race was in Lakewood last night.  Cherry Creek native Nick Langworthy addressed a standing room only crowd at the Lakewood Memorial Post Veteran's Club.  Langworthy, who is also State GOP Chairman, called it the biggest turn-out he's had on the campaign... and was very much a "homecoming of sorts" for him because he has family in Chautauqua County.  He adds that he felt there were some good, thoughtful questions from the audience, who want to see a better direction "for this Congressional district."  Landgworthy spoke and answered a wide-range of questions for more than an hour.  Afterwards... he also addressed criticism from some Republicans that -- as state Party Chairman -- he shouldn't be running for Congress.  He says he has a great staff that's helping to run the party... and, he says his opponent is also running a business while he campaigns.  That opponent is Buffalo-area developer, Carl Paladino.

Two people suffer non-life threatening gun shot wounds in Sunday evening incident in Jamestown...
Two people were shot on Jamestown's northside during an alleged incident that occured about mid-evening Sunday.  City police were called to the scene at Winsor and Crossman Streets just after 9 p.m. for a reported gunshot being heard.  Officers say they found that  two people were shot... and, subsequently transported to receive medical treatment.  Both victims sustained non-lifethreatening injuries and are in stable condition.  Police say the investigation is ongoing and further information may be released as it becomes available.  Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the JPD Confidential Tip Line at 483-TIPs... that's 483-8477.

Wendel praises "ordinary Chautauquans," and first responders quick actions in Rushdie attack...
Chautauqua County's top-elected official is praising first responders, and "ordinary Chautauquans" for their quick actions and heroism in saving the life of author Salman Rushdie at the amphitheater last Friday.  Rushdie and interviewer Henry Reese were just taking the stage when 24 year-old Hadi Mater of New Jersey rushed onto the stage and stabbed Rushdie several times.  The attack also left Reese with a head injury.  During Sunday's press event at the Hall of Philosophy... County Executive P.J. Wendel says that's when Chautauquans jumped into action.  Wendel says the incident has drawn both national and international attention... and, has shaken Chautauqua Institution -- and the county -- "to the core."  He added that it's "disappointing that we live in a society where we cannot listen to the differences of others in a place like the institution." 

Man arrested in Jamestown following DWAI crash...
A man has been arrested on Jamestown's northside for allegedly driving while under the influence of drugs when he intentionally drove his car into the rear end of another vehicle.  City police were called to the scene at North Main and West 12th Streets about 7 a.m. last Saturday... and, their investigation showed that 46 year-old Amr Elmohandis had been speeding on purpose before hitting the back of the victim's car... causing danger to both the other driver and the public.  Elmohandis was arrested for second-degree assault, second-degree criminal mischief, first-degree reckless endangerment, and DWAI-Drugs.  He was held pending arraignment.

Cattaraugus County woman seriously hurt in motorcycle accident near Kennedy...
A West Valley woman suffered serious injuries when she lost control of her motorcycle... and, it crashed while trying to pass a farm tractor in the town of Ellington.  Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene on Waterboro Hill Road -- near Kennedy -- shortly before 4 p.m. last Saturday.  Officers say they found the bike... operated by 65 year-old Cherie Steff... had crashed to the ground.  Steff was taken by medivac helicopter to a regional hospital.  The Cattaraugus County woman is not charged. 

JCC official hoping to at least meet last year's Fall semester enrollment...
The fall semester at Jamestown Community College will begin next Monday... and, while the school is still dealing with COVID-19 enrollment declines, Vice-President of Student Affairs, Kirk Young, says he's optimistic they can meet… and perhaps exceed… last year’s totals.  Young says they are ahead of last year numbers for new students.  However, he says they are struggling is in bringing back students that were there last year.  Dr. Young says JCC’s efforts to reverse a long term decline in students had just begun to bear fruit when the pandemic started.  Thanks to COVID relief dollars, the college will NOT be cutting any positions this fall.  But... Young is quick to add that those COVID funds "won't be there forever."  He adds they are working to recruit as many freshmen as possible from the shrinking number of high school graduates in the area. 

Gasoline prices continue downward trend in Jamestown-area...
The cost of a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline in the Jamestown-area has fallen 8-cents more over the past week... continuing a trend seen the past several weeks.  The AAA East Central Gas Price Reports says the price is now just under $4.45 a gallon... down from just over $4.52 last week.  However... that's still 77-cents more than a year ago.  AAA says it's finding that drivers are making significant changes to cope with high pump prices.  In a recent survey, almost two-thirds of U.S. adults have changed their driving habits or lifestyle since March.  The national average for a gallon of regular gas fell 10 cents in the past week to $3.95.

Hill, Hochul emphasize the need for Chautauqua Institution to carry out mission after Rushdie attack...
Controverial author Salman Rushdie is "on the road to recovery" three days after suffering serious injuries in a stabbing at a lecture at Chautauqua Institution.  In addition... security has been beefed up at the Chautauqua County religious and cultural retreat.  Governor Kathy Hochul addressed a gathering of press and institution residents Sunday afternoon... and, condemned the "cowardly attack" on Rushdie... along with anyone "that would dare violate the sanctity of a place like Chautauqua."  Prior to the press conference... Rushdie's agent said a ventilator had been removed from the 75-year-old's throat, and he was able to speak again.  However... he said Rushdie still has a long road ahead with injuries that are likely permanent.  Chautauqua President Michael Hill expressed gratitude for the good news regarding both Rushdie and Henry Reese... who was to interview Rushdie last Friday as part of the institution's lecture series.  Both were attacked by 24 year-old Hadi Matar of New Jersey.  Security and members of the audience helped tackle the attacker, and get Rushdie to a waiting helicopter to be taken to an Erie, Pennsylvania hospital.

Chautauqua Institution officials insist they took security precautions this season... especially regarding speakers like Salman Rushdie.  However... President Michael Hill noted that there will be an increased police presence at the institution the rest of this season... and, years to come.  Some of that was outlined by State Police Commander Kevin Bruin... who says they'll do it in conjunction with the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, and some of it people will see.  Bruin says that will include more uniformed troopers, and K-9 units in the area.  Other aspected, he says, you won't see... such as background checks, and threat assessments.  He says they will work with local police to improve security... along with the Buffalo Office of the FBI.  The institution is also instituting a "no bags" policy for people coming onto the grounds beginning today.  A trooper assigned to last Friday's amphitheater lecture was among those who initially grabbed the suspect and wisked him away.

The New Jersey man accused of attacking famed author Salman Rushdie at the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater on Friday was formally charged Saturday.  District Attorney Jason Schmidt says 24-year-old Hadi Matar is charged with second-degree attempted murder in connection with the attack... and is jailed without bail.

Two people who were in the Chautauqua Amphitheater when Salman Rushdie was attacked have spoken… anonymously... to Media One Radio News relating what they saw.  One of them was seated about three-quarters of the way up from the Amp floor... and, called it "horrifying."  The woman says the attacker got onto the stage quickly... and, began attacking Rushdie with the knife.  The second observer had just shown her ticket at one of the entrances when the attack began.  She made her way toward the stage to see what was happening... and, she saw about 8 to 10 people trying to hold down the attacker.  Both described the audience as stunned, with some people screaming. 

Pa. man seriously hurt in ATV accident in Sherman...
A Pennsylvania man was seriously hurt last weekend after his all-terrain vehicle crashed on the French Creek Road in the town of Sherman.  Sheriff's officers were called to the scene shortly after 3 p.m. last Saturday... and, found that 25 year-old Eli Laramie of Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, was operating the ATV on private property when the accident occured.  Deputies say Laramie suffered serious injuries, and was later flown to UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pennsylvania.  Sherman fire rescuers assisted at the scene.  No charges have been filed.

Exhibit of Johnny Carson opens at Comedy Center...
Several former guests from "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" were on hand last Saturday to cut the ribbon on an exhibit of his work at the National Comedy Center in Jamestown.  They also shared rememberances on stage at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts Saturday night.  During the ribbon cutting... Center Director Journey Gunderson welcomed long-time "Tonight Show" producer, Jeff Sotzing, and the others.  Sotzing had been part of the Carson show for some four-decades... in later years as a producer.  The center's "Carson Tonight" exhibit includes a just over 30-minute video presentation, hosted by current "Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon.  Gunderson adds there are dozens of artifacts from Carson's show... including the Rainbow curtain he came out from behind each night to open the show.  Also on hand for the programs were Comedian Cathy Ladman, Ventriloquist Jay Johnson, and Wildlift Expert Joan Embery. 

Cruise In another big success...
With over 200 vehicles, and throngs of people Friday at the ‘Cruise In’ in downtown Jamestown... there was just enough room for one other thing.  That was the band ‘In Crowd’ entertaining as the intersection of Third and Main became a dance floor.  Just a few steps away was WJTN’s Tom Schmidt, who appears daily on the Weather Outside.  He was there with his two Fiats to take part in the fun event that brings a lot of friends together.  Sam Ognibene, of the Der Kobblers Car Club, helps organize ‘Cruise-In’ each year.  He thinks there are several reasons why the show is so popular -- mainly that it's held on a Friday evening. 
 

(**Alert)Rushdie Attacked at Chautauqua...
Author Salman Rushdie has been attacked as he was about to give a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution.  An A-P reporter witnessed a man storm the stage Friday at the institution... and, he begin punching or stabbing Rushdie as he was being introduced.  The author was taken or fell to the floor, and the man was restrained.  However... he did reportedly walk off stage under his own power.  Rushdie's book ``The Satanic Verses'' has been banned in Iran since 1988... as many Muslims consider it to be blasphemous.  A year later, Iran's late leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, or edict, calling for Rushdie's death.  Iran has also offered over $3 million in reward for anyone who kills Rushdie.

Two men from Ohio escape serious injury in small plane crash in town of Harmony...
Two men from Ohio were hurt... but, not seriously... when their single-engine light plane crashed into a back yard off Baker Street Extension in the town of Harmony.  Sheriff's officers say they received a report about the plane coming down just after 11 p.m., and deputies were joined by Lakewood-Busti Police and State Police at the scene.  Officers say the two men... 63 year-old Lawrence Zupon of Bentleyville and 25 year-old Daniel Rossi of Mayfield Heights, Ohio were conducting training exercises when the plane lost power.  Police say the plane then crashed into the wooded area.  However... both Zupon and Rossi were able to walk away from the wreckage.  Both men were treated at the scene... and, later taken to UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa. for further treatment.  The Sheriff's Department and the FAA are investigating the accident.

City man arrested on child porn charges...
A Jamestown man has been arrested by federal agents on multiple-child pornography charges stemming from an incident last February.  U.S. Attorney Trini Ross has announced that 34 year-old Roberto Millan was arrested on a complaint charging him with production and attempted production of child pornography, and possession of child pornography.  Prosecutors say Jamestown police received the initial complaint in early February that Millan had sexually abused a 15-year-old girl.  They say the victim told investigators that Millan requested her to produce sexually explicit images to sent to him via text and Facebook messenger.  Prosecutors says she initially refused... but she eventually produced the requested images after Millan threatened to harm her family.  The victim also said that during the first time Millan sexually abuse her, he warned that if she “made too much noise,” he would physically harm her family.  Police later recovered sexually explicit text messages from Millan's cell phone... along with images of child porn.  Ross says the charges carry a minimum penalty of 5 years in prison, a maximum of 30, and a $250,000 fine.

Jamestown man arrested on Colfax Ave. following drug raid...
A city man is jailed allegedly trafficking illegal narcotics from his apartment on Jamestown's southside following a raid early Thursday morning.  City Police say members of the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force executed a search warrant on the lower apartment at 57 Colfax Ave. about 6 a.m. Thursday with the help of the JPD SWAT Team.  They found 49 year-old Jason Parker inside... and, found him in possession of a quantity of fentanyl, cocaine, and items used for the packaging and distribution of those drugs.  Parker was taken to the city jail pending arraignment on two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled Substance... seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia.  The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, State Police and other agencies assisted.  If you have any information on illegal drug activity in the city... call the JPD Tips line at 483-TIPS... that's 483-8477.

City police investigating reported burglary at La Cucina restaurant...
City police are asking for the public's help in solving a reported burglary that occured at an italian restaurant on Jamestown's westside late last month.  The Jametown Police Detective Bureau says the break-in occured at the La Cucina Della Nonna located on West Third Street -- across from the Third Street Plaza -- during the overnight hours of Wednesday, July 27.  Police say an unknown person or persons entered the business, and stole an undisclosed amount of property.  Anyone with information regarding the burglary, or that may be able to identify the subject in a photograph they've released on Facebook... is asked to contract Detective Powers at 483-7620, or the anonymous tip line at 483-8477.

More than $26,000 raised by "Cents for St. Susan's" campaign...
A major fund-raiser for the Jamestown-area's largest soup kitchen has been another huge success.  Supporters of the annual "Cents for St. Susan's campaign for the St. Susan's Center on Water Street, gathered Thursday to announce the effort had brought in $26,693 dollars.  Over it's 23 years... the campaign has raised more than $306,000.  The Board of Public Utilities leads it... and, Spokeswoman Becky Robbins says sponsors put in more than $20,000.  Robbins adds that $10,000 of that came from Steve and Judy McAllaster.  Three others -- Chautauqua Chemicals, Key Bank and Kwik Fill -- put in $1,000 each.  She adds the Robinson Law Office contributes $650 dollars... and, 14 others each put in $500 each.  They include: Asplundh, Boyles Motor Sales, Century 21/Turner Brokers, Dan and Connie Evans, Robbins and Johnson Attorneys, the Shults Auto Group, R. Patti Excavating and Concrete, Sloan Melhuish Insurance, Store-N-Lock Self-Storage, Weinberg Financial Group, Wright-Calimeri Attorneys, Falconer Printing and Design, Northwest, The Heritage Group, and the Legends Group. 

Jamestown to again host Labor Day Festival on first Sunday in September...
The city of Jamestown's annual Labor Day Festival is back this year following a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Mayor Eddie Sundquist says it's planned for Sunday, Sept. 4, beginning at 12 Noon at Bergman Park.  As usual... Sundquist says it'll end with the traditional fireworks display at dusk or shortly after.  He's very happy to have it back because... it'll be the first one he's been able to be part of since being elected mayor.  He says it'll be the 41st Labor Day Festival that will again celebrate organized labor in the community.  Sundquist says they'll have a full midway again this year with food and beverage vendors... and other activites at the park.  One of the activites back this year will be the presentation of the George Ritzer Labor Award presented by the Jamestown Central Labor Council.

Jamestown trio arrested for alleged drug trafficking...
Three people have been arrested for allegedly trafficking fentanyl and crack cocaine on Jamestown's eastside following a raid on their residence Wednesday afternoon.  City police say members of the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at 728 East Seventh St. about 1 p.m., and, arrested 29 year-old Ashlyann Marie Lopez-Lopez... 45 year-old Angel Cruz-Cruz... and 41 year-old Zuleyka Michelle Fuentes-Cruz.  The JPD SWAT Team assisted... and, they also found three children inside.  Police say a search also uncovered a quantity of money... 11.3 grams of fentanyl, and 57.5 grams of crack cocaine.  The trio is each charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  City police were assisted by the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, and Emergency Services... and, FBI in the investigation.  Anyone with information on illegal drug activity in the city is asked to call the anonymous tips line at 483-TIPS... that's 483-8477.

Four city residents indicted on federal drug trafficking charges...
Four Jamestown residents have been indicted by a federal grand jury on drug charges for their alleged involvement in narcotics trafficking between 2019 and 2021.  U.S. Attorney Trini Ross announced Wednesday that the panel returned the indictments against 53 year-old Roberto Morales-Sanchez... 36 year-old Ryan Bloom... 36 year-old Rachelle Allison... and, 30 year-old Katie Calimeri.  Ross says all four are charged with narcotics conspiracy, which carries a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum of life.   Prosecutors say the four conspired to sell heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl in the Jamestown area.  They are also accused of using two city residences for drug trafficking purposes.  Bloom is also charged with distributing controlled substances, which caused serious bodily injury to an individual. 

Jamestown firefighters make quick work of kitchen fire early Wednesday...
Quick work by Jamestown firefighters prevented a kitchen fire from spreading through-out a southside home early this morning.  City Fire Battalion Chief Brian Acterberg says crews were called to 204 Hazzard Street about 4:30 a.m., and, found fire coming from the kitchen.  Acterberg says crews got inside and got the fire under control quickly... confining fire damage to that room.  He says there was smoke and water damage otherwise.  One occupant was treated for smoke inhalation... but, everyone else got out unhurt.  Cooking food on the stove apparently triggered the small blaze.  Acterberg says the Red Cross is helping the family temporarily.  Crews were at the scene about two-hours.

Carrubba says details still being discussed on new, proposed housing ordinances...
An initial meeting between Jametown development officials and the group representing local landlords has been held regarding three proposals leaders believe will improve the city's housing situation.  The chairwoman of the City Council's Housing Committee, Marie Carrubba, updated the panel on that first meeting at Monday night's work session.  Carrubba says during talks with the Real Estate Investors Association... they found the need to better clarify the public nuisance ordinance because there is some "vagueness" in how police to deal with tenant-landlord matters.  She says those at the meeting did not have a chance to completely review a second part of the proposal regarding vacant properties and Rental Inspections.  She says they plan to meet again on that proposal... and once everything is reviewed... REIA representatives will take the ordinance back to their group.  The city was representated at this past Monday's meeting by Development Director Crystal Surdyk, and the department's legal counsel, Ben Haskins.  The third part of the proposal deals with updating the city's landlord registry.

City man arrested following domestic incident...
A Jamestown man has been arrested for allegedly grabbing a woman, and choking her during a domestic incident on the city's southside early last evening.  Jamestown police say officers were called to the undisclosed scene just before 6 p.m., and, learned on arrival that 33 year-old Anthony Rios-Colon had grabbed the woman by the neck, and began choking her in the presence of two young girls.  Poice say Rios-Colon then alleged held the victim against a wall... and, pushed one of the girls.  The second girl then became very upset.  Officers arrested Rios-Colon on one count of criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation... and, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.  He was taken to the city jail, pending arraignment.    

Jamestown's annual 'Cruise-In' back this coming weekend...
The popular ‘Cruise-In’ is returning to downtown Jamestown on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.  The Jamestown Community Chamber of Commerce is again hosting the event... and, Chamber Coordinator Carrie Swanson says there’ll be all kinds of hot rods, classic cars and elegant autos on hand, mainly on Third Street between Washington and Spring Streets... and, they will also be on some of the side streets in that area.  Last year... some 200 vehicles lined up for ‘Cruise-In’ and Swanson expects just as many, if not more… this year.  She says there is a $10 entry fee for all the cars... and, the "entry point" for parking the cars will be at East Third and Spring Streets.  There’s no charge to view the cars, and for the second year in a row there’ll be a ‘text to win’ contest for a $100 ‘Shop Local CHQ card.’  The band ‘In Crowd’ will be providing the entertainment for ‘Cruise In’ again this year..… at the corner of Third and Main.

Four people arrested following high-speed car chase, and drug raid in Jamestown...
Four people have been arrested -- including a wanted parolee -- on several drug-related charges following a high-speed chase that began in Jamestown and ended in Frewsburg.  City police say officers attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Willard and Allen Streets just before Noon Tuesday after spotting the parolee... 40 year-old Samuel Pointer of Jamestown and Buffalo... driving the vehicle.  Police tried to stop Pointer... but, he wouldn't comply... and, led officers on the chase into the town of Ellicott, and then Frewsburg.  They say Pointer finally stopped on the Falconer-Frewsburg Road, and he and a woman in the car, 23 year-old Dakota Trippe of Jamestown, were arrested.  There was also a child under the age of one-year-old in the car's back seat.  Members of the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force later conducted a raid on Pointer's home... and, found the other two suspects... 44 year-old Russell Barlett of Jamestown, and 49 year-old Don Lawson of Buffalo.  They also found just over 11-grams of heroin, 1.6-grams of crack cocaine, 8.4 grams of fentanyl, nearly 30-grams of methamphetamine, and two handguns.  Pointer faces 14 individual charges... including two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and, three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  He's also charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle.  Lawson also faces two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, and three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance.  Police say Trippe and Bartlett are each charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and one count of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

City man busted for drug possession after traffic stop...
A Jamestown man faces several drug-releated charges following a traffic stop on the city's eastside early Tuesday morning.  Jamestown Police say they stopped 37 year-old Tyler Elsesser in the area of East Second and Cowing Streets shortly after 3 a.m., and, found he had a suspended license... and, he was arrested.  Officers then searched the vehicle... and, found various quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, Fentanyl, Heroin, prescription pills and suboxone.  They also found digital scales.  Elsesser was arrested on one count of Felony third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... five counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and one count of second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia.  He's also charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle... and, was jailed pending arraignment.

Investigation continues into fatal shooting in Sinclairville...
The investigation is continuing into a fatal shooting that occurred in the village of Sinclairville last month. 18-year-old Joseph Misciagno of Cassadaga died after being shot in the lower back following a dispute in the area of Reed and Park Streets shortly after 7:30 p.m. on July 5.  Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone gave an update Tuesday on where the investigation stands, and says they anticipate charges "relatively soon" depending on follow up investigations.  Quattrone says one of the reasons an arrest has not been made is because of recent changes to New York State's discovery laws... because you can't continue an investigation now once an arrest is made.  Six people were reportedly involved in a dispute that led to the shooting, including Misciagno.

City woman arrested after child found wandering alone...
A city woman has been arrested for allegedly leaving her 2-year-old child unattended... and, left wandering in the area of West Ninth and Cherry Streets Monday night.  Jamestown police were on patrol in the area when officers were flagged down by two citizens shortly before 8 p.m.  Police say they had the 2-year-old with them... noting the child was alone.  Officers say it was about 30 to 40 minutes before they found 19 year-old Lynette Merced... and, arrested her for endangering the welfare of a child.  They say the child was found about two-blocks away from their home... but was not hurt.  The infant was turned over to another family member.

Della Pia "fearful" of what may happen in Congress if polarization becomes worse...
The Democratic candidate for the 23rd Congressional seat in this month's special election... and, the general election in November….. spoke to supporters Tuesday evening at Dow Park in Jamestown.  Owego's Max Della Pia says he is ‘fearful for what is going to come ahead... if we don’t have the right people in Congress.’  Della Pia says we need people moved by service to their country... not for political gain, power, or money.  The Republican primary for Congress on Aug. 23, the same day as the special election, is getting a lot of press.  Della Pia calls that a gift.  He says some people he's spoken with say they're kind of sick of "the polarization, the anger, the hate" in politics now.  Della Pia says he's not that kind of person. 

2021 Audit shows Jamestown "rainy day" fund growing...
The city of Jamestown wound up fiscal year 2021 with a very "positive financial result..." with revenues exceeding spending by about $4-million.  That from the city's third-party auditor... Accountant Carl Widmer with the firm Drescher and Malecki... which performed Jamestown's audit for the second year in a row.  Speaking to the City Council at Monday night's work session... Widmer noted that most of that was "unexpected revenues..." fueled mainly by sales tax proceeds that came in between $1.2-million to $2-million over budget.  In fact... he says the city has done well in it's budgeting the past five years... with the overall, undesignated fund balance... now at just over $6-million.  He says that's 17.2% of total year's revenues... which he says is well within what the Government Financial Officers Association recommends municipalities keep on hand for emergencies.  He says they should have 16.7% of annual funds... and he says the city is now just past that.  Widmer says having 2 to 3 months funding is most advisable. 
 
 

Council Finance Committee approves added $3-million in ARPA funding for housing and property improvement programs...
The Jamestown City Council will vote later this month on adding another $3-million in American Rescue Plan Act funding to two programs to upgrade housing and other property improvement programs.  The Council's Finance Committee approved both measures last night.  Acting Committee Chairwoman Marie Carrubba says $1-million will be used to replenish the Building and Infrastructure Improvements program... which had been reduced to $500,000.  She says the action would restore the program to $1.5-million... which was the original amount.  The Finance Committee also approved adding $2-million to the city's Healthy Communities and Neighborhoods funds to support roof, private sewer, and water line repair and replacement.  Carrubba says there have been 130 requests for funding originally from the program... and, one-third were found to be eligible for the funding.  But, only 10 were found to be ineligible for funding.  The program was originally funded last March for $750,000.

City officials pleased with how Lucille Ball Comedy Festival went downtown...
Jamestown city officials are pleased with how last week's Lucille Ball Comedy Festival turned out following it's two-year, COVID pandemic hiatus.  City Council President Tony Dolce says he attended some of the events... and, says the attendance was great... and, the response very positive.  Mayor Eddie Sundquist echoed those sentiments... adding that downtown businesses were very pleased with how it all went.  Sundquist says it "was wonderful to see people back in Jamestown, and enjoying (the festival)."  He adds that he spoke with a number of business owners who were pleased to see business back to where it was before the pandemic.  Sundquist added that one local restaurant may be the beneficiary of some positive publicity.  He says he understands that eatery will soon be featured on the "Food Network" for what they did during the festival.  Several of the major activities from the five-day event... which ran last Wednesday through Sunday... were sold out.  

Woman from Gerry arrested for alleged assault with vehicle, and machete... 
A Gerry woman faces assault and menacing charges after she allegedly stuck another woman with her car... then struck her several times with the side of a machete.  State Police in Jamestown say they were called to a home in on Rt. 380 on a report of someone being struck by a vehicle.  Troopers say they found that 64 year-old Mary Butler was driving with four youths inside the car last Thursday... and, swerved to hit the woman, who was on the side of the road.  Police say Butler got out of the car... and, then struck the victim with the flat side of the machete.  Butler then fled the scene... and, the victim was taken to UPMC Chautauqua Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.  Butler was later found at her home... and, she was arrested for second-degree assault... second-degree menacing... second-degree reckless endangerment and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.  She was processed... and, taken to the county jail pending arraignment.

Schumer highlights what Inflation Reduction Act will bring to upstate region...
New York's Senior U-S Senator is back in the state... and, is touting major victories in recent weeks... including Sunday's approval of the more than $700-billion Inflation Reduction Act.  During a Zoom conference with state-wide media Monday afternoon... Democrat Charles Schumer said "persistance" helped get the final legislation over the finish line... though it's less ambitious than President Joe Biden's original domestic goals.  Schumer says there will be upwards of 9-million new clean energy jobs created through the measure... and, "hundreds of thousands of those will be in upstate New York.  Several climate change tax credit and other programs are part of the package.  Schumer says they include alternative fuels for cars and trucks... including advancement of hydrogen technology being developed by Cummins' Jamestown Engine Plant.  In addition... Schumer says there will be funding to help lower energy costs for upstate New Yorkers in the bill.  The lowering of prescription drug costs is also part of the measure... including a $35-dollar cap on insulin costs for people on Medicare.  Finally... Schumer says the measure... which now heads back to the House of Representatives... includes $300-billion in deficit reduction.

Two county men sentenced in Chautauqua County Court...
Two Chautauqua County men have been sentenced to state prison time... one for illegal drug possession... and another for illegally possessing a loaded gun.  District Attorney Jason Schmidt says today that 37 year-old Richard Sendall of Brocton, received a determinate term of six years in prison... and, three years post-release supervision after having pled guilty to two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... both class B felonies.  Schmidt says Sendall entered the pleas back in May.  The two counts are from two separate incidents, one in the City of Jamestown and one in the Town of Ellery.

D.A. Schmidt also reports that 53 year-old Aaron Davis of Jamestown was sentenced to a determinate state prison term of five-years with 5 years post release supervision after having pled guilty to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon -- loaded firearm.  Schmidt says that's a class C felony.  The conviction occurred earlier this year in March 2022... and, Davis was sentenced as a violent felony offender after having two felony convictions within 10 years. 

Pa. man arrested for alleged fight, and assault...
A North East, Pennsylvania man faces several charges after allegedly getting into a fight, and injuring that person early last Saturday morning in the town of Ripley.  Sheriff's officers were called to a home on the Northeast-Sherman Road just after 12:30 a.m., and, found that 58 year-old William Leamer physically hurt the other person... but, also intentionally damaged property belonging to that person.  Leamer is also accused of keeping that person from being able to call 9-1-1.  Deputies say the victim told them that Leamer had fled the scene on foot... and, officers called in the Department's K-9 Unit.  K-9 "Link" later found Leamer hiding in some tall grass, several hundred yards from the residence.  He was arrested on charges of third-degree assault... two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief... and, resisting arrest... and, taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.

North county man arrested for DWI and allegedly using a cellphone in crash...
A Fredonia man has been arrested for allegedly driving while drunk... and, using his cellphone when his car crashed on the Ellery-Centralia Rd. in the town of Stockton early last Saturday.  Sheriff's officers were called to the scene about 1:30 a.m., and, found the operator was 19 year-old David Hahn.  Further investigation... troopers determined that Hahn was driving while intoxicated.  He's also accused of using his cell phone while driving.  Police arrested him for DWI... and, operating a motor vehicle while using a portable electronic device.  Hahn was issued appearance tickets for Stockton Town Court at a later date.

Gerry Rodeo sets more records for crowd size and competitors...
This year’s Gerry Rodeo..… the 77th annual..… will go down as one of the biggest and best.  That from Spokesman Paul Cooley... who says at 10,000 people attended the shows Wednesday through Saturday nights.  Cooley says -- inspite of threatening weather for two nights... it seemed to go around them, and the crowds were "just amazing."  He adds it was one of the biggest years in another way… with around 200 performers vying for prizes.  Cooley says they had a full contingent of bronc riders, something that's usually hard to find.  Some 3,000 roast beef dinners were served over the four days.  All the rodeo proceeds go to support the Gerry Fire Department’s operations for the next year.  Cooley thanked the 150 volunteers from all over the community who helped make the annual rodeo successful.

The 109th Ellington Town Picnic also a big success...
The town square in Ellington was jammed Saturday night with vendors, adults in lawn chairs, and kids with hula-hoops..… all listening to the music of Paul Zittel and Pure Country.  They were there for the 109th Ellington Town Picnic.  The picnic association’s President, Mat Pickup, proclaimed the event a success.  Pickup says they had some rainy weather on Friday night -- but, they got through it, and, the crowd came out then and Saturday night as well.  The Ellington Town Picnic is the longest running such event in the country….. and features some popular ‘old time’ competitions.  More than 20 entrants were registered for the baby show.  More than 30 people competed in the saw cutting contest, and 14 dogs and one hamster vied for prizes in the pet show.

Man from Indiana arrested in Stow for speeding, drug possession...
An Indiana man faces drug-related charges after his car was stopped for speeding on Interstate 86 in Stow late last week.  State Police in Jamestown say they stopped 36 year-old Brandon White of Pekin, IN. for speeding late Thursday... and, during the stop... they allegedly found him in possession of oxycodone pills, several packages of methamphetamine, and a digital scale with drug residue on it.  White was arrested for second-degree criminally using Drug Paraphernalia... and, two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a Controlled Substance.  He was processed at State Police headquarters... and issued appearance tickets for North Harmony Town Court at a later date.

Wendel pays tribube to Arden Johnson, and Howard Howlett on their passing...
Two men who were considered giants in the community for their work in local politics... and, public service... are being remembered on their recent passing.  The politician is retired Ellery Town Supervisor Arden Johnson... who passed away on July 30 at the age of 91.  Even though he had retired sometime back... County Executive P-J Wendel says the life-long Republican was still active in the community... like former county GOP Chairman Al Hendrickson... who passed away at age 90 last February.  The other passing Wendel recognized was that of long-time retired auto dealer Howard Howlett... who died at age 83.  Howlett was among the founders, with late Sheriff John Bentley, and Murray Marsh, of Starflight helicopter.  He passed away July 26.  Wendel made his comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Media One Radio Group stations.

City man arrested for DWI, and leaving the scene of an accident...
A Jamestown man is accused of drunk driving after allegedly being involved in a property damage accident... and, driving off from the scene.  City police were called to a location on the westside about 5 p.m. last Friday for a driver leaving the scene.  Officers say they later spotted the suspect vehicle in the parking lot of the Jefferson Street Laundromat... and, found the driver, 78 year-old Bruce Ellis, was intoxicated.  Police say Ellis is charged with DWI... and, leaving the scene of a property damage accident.   No injuries were reported.

Former Sherman village treasurer arrested for allegedly stealing more than $20,000 from village...
A former Sherman village treasurer has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $20,000 in tax and fee payments from village residents.  State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has announced that 54 year-old Ann Gilbert was taken into custody for allegedly using those payments to pay her own bills... and, for personal items from places like Dollar General, Walmart and others between 2012 and 2016.  The missing money was reported after DiNapoli's Office performed an audit earlier this year.  Gilbert... who now resides in Florida... was arrested by Chautauqua County Sheriff's Deputies on a charge of third-degree Grand Larceny.  DiNapoli's office worked with local District Attorney Jason Schmidt's Office.  The comptroller says "Gilbert allegedly betrayed her neighbors by pocketing tax payments to pay her personal expenses.  I thank District Attorney Schmidt and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office for partnering with my office to hold her accountable.”  He added that, once Mayor Colleen Meeder found out about the missing money, she contacted his office.  Gilbert served as Sherman's treasurer from 2007 to 2016.

Tricky Forecast shows strong chance of rain at times through the weekend...
There will be a strong chance of rain at times  through Sunday.  That from Forecaster Kirk Apffel with the National Weather Service in Buffalo... who told us Thursday that the greatest probability is coming before the weekend.  Apffel says rain will be a little more widespread later in the day Friday.  Apfell says the current atmospheric conditions make the rain difficult to predict.  Organizers of outdoor events and those who want to attend are advised to keep an eye on the radar and be prepared for quick changes in conditions.

Gerry Rodeo has sell-outs for first two nights of performances...
There was a prediction of thunderstorms last night... but, they stayed away... and more than 2,000 fans were on hand to watch the second-night of the Gerry Rodeo.  A special tribute was held at the beginning for military members, first responders, and health care workers by having them stand to a prolonged ovation from the fans.  Another large number of rodeo cowboys and cowgirls took part... with Bareback bronc riding kicked off the competition with seven of the nine cowboys making successful rides.  However... only three of the ten cowgirls were able to successfully rope their calves in the breakaway roping event.  There was a capacity crowd on hand for the first night Wednesday at the 77th annual rodeo... and they saw a record number of cowboys and cowgirls begin competition.  The rodeo continues tonight through Saturday at the Rodeo Grounds in Gerry.

Ellington Picnic gets underway tonight, and continues through Sunday...
Of all the events happening in the Jamestown area this weekend, none has a longer history than the Ellington Town Picnic.  This weekend's is the 109th in the series.  Picnic Association President, Mat Pickup, says they offer all kinds of 'traditional  fun'... especially on Saturday with a baby show, a pet show, wood cutting, and a chicken barbecue.  The activities are centered around the town square in Ellington.  There is no admission charge.  There will be bounce houses at the picnic for the first time in two years.  The Ellington Town Picnic begins tonight with music and vendors... runs all day until fireworks on Saturday, with a few concluding events Sunday.  The full schedule is available on the 'Ellington Town Picnic' Facebook page.  

Wendel: No Monkeypox seen yet in Chautauqua County...
Chautauqua County officials are monitoring the Monkeypox situation... though it's not contracted through either casual contact or close proximity to an infected person.  That from County Executive P-J Wendel... who says there have still been no cases detected in the county.  However... there have been at least two in nearby Erie County.  Wendel says he's also talked with New York's Health Commissioner, Dr. Mary Basset, about it during a Zoom call.  He says there are a couple of specific "risk groups" involved, and they need to be careful.  Unlike COVID-19... which is spread through the air... Wendel says Monkeypox is contracted by "skin to skin" contact... and, he says it's not through "casual contact, either."  Prior to Erie County's cases... Wendel says the closest case was in Chemung County.  The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports the monkeypox virus is spreading mostly through close, intimate contact with someone who has it... and, you can take steps to prevent getting monkeypox and lower your risk during sexual contact.  For more information... go to cdc.gov.

The 2022 Chautauqua Vintage Book & Paper Show is set for Saturday in Mayville...
A vintage book and paper show and sale is going on tomorrow in Mayville to benefit the Jamestown Trolley Car Restoration Project.  The show is being held this year in a new and larger location... the Chautauqua Suites... from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Organizers say the Chautauqua Vintage Book and Paper Show will feature over 20 different dealers on hand selling a large variety of items, including vintage and rare books, first editions, antiquarian books, local history, postcards, photography, maps,  historic documents, posters, sports memorabilia, comic books, trade cards, sheet music, and more.  Once again... that runs from 10 until 4 tomorrow at Chautauqua Suites in Mayville.  Admission is $5 per person.

City man arrested on drug trafficking charges following traffic stop...
A Jamestown man has been arrested for allegedly being in possession of several kinds of illegal drugs after his car was stopped for not signaling a turn on the city's eastside.  City police say officers conducted a traffic stop in the area of Pine and East Fifth Streets just after 6 a.m. Tuesday... and, found the driver, identified as 38 year-old Stephen Glover, Sr., had a suspended license.  Glover was arrested for second-degree unlicensed operation.  A further search of the vehicle yielded a quantity of methamphetamine, Fentanyl, and digital scales.  Glover was taken to the city jail pending arraignement on charges of third-and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.... second-degree criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia... and, failure to signal prior to 100 feet of a turn.

Jamestown man gets 5 years in prison for burglary, and attempted burglary...
A city man has been sentenced to five-years in state prison for second-degree attempted burglary... along with five-years supervised parole.  Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt says 46 year-old David Spunaugle recently received the jail term from County Court Judge David Foley.  Schmidt says Spunaugle was also given to 2-to-4 years indeterminate in state prison on his conviction for a third-degree burglary charge... which will run concurrently.  Schmidt says Spanaugle was awaiting a court date on the attempted burglary charge when he burglarized another person’s home.  The D-A thanked both State Police, and Jamestown Police for their investigation of these two cases.

Gerry Rodeo draws capacity crowd for opening night...
There was a capacity crowd on hand for the opening performance of the 77th annual Gerry Rodeo last night... and they saw a record number of cowboys and cowgirls begin competition.  Spokesman Paul Cooley reports the "very physically demanding bareback bronc riding" event kicked off the action with three cowboys making successful rides.  The top rider was Louisiana's Kade Sonnier, who scored 82 points.  The 10 steer wrestlers had little success in throwing their steers to the arena dirt.  Cooley says only Terrek Keller of Fredonia, Pennsylvania, was able to leap from his speeding horse, grab his steer by the horns, and wrestle it to the ground in a very fast 5.5 seconds.  The rodeo continues tonight through Saturday at the Rodeo Grounds in Gerry.

Lucille Ball Comedy Festival gets fully-underway today...
The Lucille Ball Comedy Festival is fully-underway in Jamestown... and, the immediate area... with more than 50 events taking place through Sunday.  The first big show will be held tonight at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts when Margaret Cho takes the stage at 7 p.m.  National Comedy Center Director Journey Gunderson says Cho worked hard to become one of the best comediannes ever... and, they're happy to have her.  There are still tickets remaining for Margaret Cho's performance at the Reg Lenna.  Friday night's first show for legend Jeff Foxworthy at 7 p.m. is sold out.  However... the Comedy Center's website shows his second performance at 9:30 still has a "limited number" of tickets left.  The final headliner program on Saturday with Saturday Night Live Legends David Spade, Kevin Nealon and Rob Schneider is also sold out.  For more information... go on-line to ComedyCenter.org.

Gillibrand calls on Biden Administration to use Defense Production Act to make more monkeypox vaccines...
New York's junior U.S. Senator is calling on the Biden Administration to invoke the Defense Production Act to increase domestic production and access to monkeypox vaccines.  Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand says... as monkeypox spreads through-out the United States... more than one in 4 case in the U-S are in New York State.  During a video press conference Wednesday... Gillibrand added that New York has declared  State Disaster Emergency in response to the outbreak... noting that the state has been allotted 170,000 vaccine doses from the federal government.  She says there are currently more than 6,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox in the U.S., including several in children, and New York State has emerged as a center of the outbreak.  She adds that case are expected to rise, but the U.S. does not currently have enough vaccines to protect all at-risk individuals.  In fact... she says of the 170,000 doses being sent to New York... 90,000 are going to New York City.  Gillibrand says invoking the Defense Production Act would give the president the authority to mandate that corporations and manufacturers accelerate production of this critical vaccine. 

Gasoline prices down again this week in Jamestown-area...
The price for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline in the Jamestown-area has fallen by nearly 10-cents from what it was at the beginning of last week.  But, while the price is now more than 30-cents a gallon less than a month ago... it's still nearly $1.25 more than this time last year.  The AAA East Central's Gas Price Report says the price began the week at just under $4.56 a gallon.  However, it's now down in many places to just under $4.53 a gallon.  AAA says national average price has fallen 14 cents over the past week to $4.21.  About half the stations in the country are now selling gas at less than $4 a gallon.  While gasoline consumption is up... the crude oil price remains under $100 a barrel at just over $98.

Preliminary cause given on fire at Fredonia tavern... 
It appears that Monday afternoon's fire that damaged Heenan's Irish Pub in Fredonia started accidently.  The Post-Journal reported late Tuesday that Chautauqua County fire investigators determined that village crews burning weeds on the sidewalk in the area likely sparked flames that caught the side of the building on fire.  Fredonia Fire Chief Josh Myers says the call came in as a fire on an exterior wall shortly before 3 p.m., and on arrival, saw the fire going on the outside, but, adds it was moving into the interior at the same time.  Fredonia crews got mutual aid at the scene from the city of Dunkirk and Sheridan crews.  Fredonia Mayor Doug Essek, who is also a volunteer firefighter, praised the work of the fire crews.  Essek says there's always concern over a fire in an older building where flames can travel quickly.  County fire investigators were later brought to the scene... and, it's believed the fire started on the exterior of the building at ground level. 

Suspect sought in Seneca Casino robbery in Cattaraugus County...
State Police in Cattaraugus County are asking for the public's help in finding the suspect in an armed robbery at Seneca Gaming and Entertainment Oil Springs Casino in the town of Ischua.   Troopers in Machias say the unidentified man entered the casino just before 11 p.m. last Saturday night... displaying what appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun, and carrying a cloth shopping bag.  They say the man approached the cashier cage where he demanded money.  The suspect appeared to be an average build white male and approximately 5'9" inches tall... and, he was wearing a camouflage shirt, hat, mask, dark sweatpants and black sneakers with white trim.   The suspect appeared to be wearing transparent gloves with the words LOVE either tattooed on his knuckles or drawn on the gloves.  He left on foot with cash in the shopping bag, as well as a cashier drawer.  Anyone with information can contact State Police at 585-344-6200.  

Borrello introduces legislation to eliminate Farm Laborer's Wage Board...
Local State Senator George Borrello has made good on his word... and, has introduced legislation in Albany that would eliminate the three-member Farm Laborers Wage Board.  A companion measure in the State Assembly has been introduced by Ranking Minority Agriculture Committee member, Chris Tague.  The wage board was established as part of Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act approved in 2019.  Borrello says the board is charged with making a recommendation on reducing the current 60-hour overtime threshold for farm workers to 40 hours.  Back in January... Borrello says more than 70% of the testimony given during public hearings was concerns over the harm that such a measure would cause.  Borrello says "the wage board has just one member with an agricultural background, making it ill-equipped to render sound, informed decisions concerning New York State’s critically-important agriculture industry."  The board is to meet next on September 6th to make it's final report and recommendations to state leaders.

Annual Gerry Rodeo set for 77th edition to begin tonight...
About 200 professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls will be taking part in the 77th Gerry Rodeo... which is set to begin tonight at the grounds of Rt. 60.  The first performance will be held at 8 p.m., and will feature several men's divisions... and, two for the women this year.  Long-time rodeo Spokesman, Paul Cooley... says the rodeo's stock contractor and producer... Painted Pony from Lake Lucerne, New York... is back again.  He said Tuesday they've brought more than 100 head of bulls and horses this year.  Florida's Brinson James is this year's rodeo clown... and, entertainer.  It's the 28 year-olds first time at Gerry... and, told our Dennis Webster that he's enjoyed his short stay so far.  James has been a rodeo clown the past 10 years... and, says he's been to most of the major rodeos in North America... including the Calgary Stampede in Canada.  The Gerry Rodeo runs each night... tonight through Saturday beginning at 8 p.m.  The Gerry Fire Department will also be selling their traditional beef barbecue dinners beginning at 5.  For more information... go on-line to gerryrodeo.org.

Attica Book Ban Lifted...
New York state prison authorities have lifted a ban on a book about the 1971 Attica uprising following a First Amendment lawsuit.  Author Heather Ann Thompson, a historian and professor at the University of Michigan, sued the state's prisons in March in Manhattan federal court over the censorship of her book ``Blood in the Water: The Attica Uprising of 1971.''  Prison official said last week in a letter to a Manhattan federal judge that they would dismiss the ban... but, will cut out a two-page map from all copies for security purposes.

Fredonia pub damaged by fire Monday afternoon...
No one was hurt... but, a mid-afternoon fire Monday damaged a long-time tavern in the north count village of Fredonia.  Chautauqua County fire investigators say Fredonia fire crews were called to Heenan's Bar at 39 East Main Street about 3 p.m., and, crews were able to extinguish the blaze quickly.  Fredonia got mutual aid at the scene from city of Dunkirk, and Sheridan firefighters.  Investigators were called in... and, say they determined the fire on the exterior of the building at ground level.  They add the investigation will continue. 

County BOE reminds residents that early voting for special election and GOP primary beings Aug. 6...
Early voting begins a week from this coming Saturday, Aug. 6 for the special election and Republican primary for New York's 23rd Congressional District.  The Chautauqua County Board of Elections will be utilizing four locations in the county for that.  That from Republican Elections Commissioner Brian Abram... who says the Special Election to fill out the remaining four months of former Congresman Tom Reed's term... pits Republican Joe Sempelinski against Democrat Max Della Pia.  Abram says both that, and the Republican primary between state GOP leader Nick Langworthy and Buffalo-area developer Carl Paladino are running at the same time.  Sempelinski is Reed's former chief of staff.  Any registered voter can take part in the Special Election.  However... Abram emphasizes that only Republicans will receive the second ballot to vote for either State GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy, or Buffalo Developer Carl Paladino for the primary to run for a full, two-year term in the 23rd District against Della Pia in November.  Meanwhile... Abram says all polling locations in the county will be open on Tuesday, Aug. 23, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Sinclairville man arrested for attempted assault...
A man from Sinclairville has been arrested for allegedly trying to assault another person during an altercation in the village early Monday afternoon.  Sheriff's deputies were called to a location on Main Street in Sinclairville about 12:30 p.m. for an "assault in progress."  Officers say their investigation led to the arrest of 31 year-old Ronald Dunam, Junior after he allegedly struck another individual.  They say Dunam was charged with third-degree attempted assault... and, taken to the county jail pending arraignment.

Alleged domestic in Cattaraugus County leads to arrest of Jametown woman...
Cattaraugus County Sheriff's officers say an alleged domestic incident involving two women in the town of Randolph has led to the arrest of a Jamestown woman.  Sheriff's deputies in Little Valley were called to the scene on Windmill Road Sunday morning... and, saw the vehicle of one woman trying to leave the scene.  Officers say they found both women inside the car once they stopped it... and found that one, identified as 45 year-old Tammy Wendell, had a warrant for her arrest.  She was taken into custody... and, issued an appearance ticket for Randolph Town Court.  Sheriff's officers say the domestic incident was investigated... but no other charges were filed.

Borrello wishes new president and CEO at Brooks Hospital the best in trying to turn it around...
State Senator George Borrello is reacting to the recent announcement of a new President and Chief Executive Officer of Brooks-TLC Hospital in Dunkirk.  The Sunset Bay Republican says he looks forward to working with Kenneth Morris, who succeeds Mary LaRowe who is left the post Monday for retirement.  Borrello says "we'll support them..." but, warns there needs to be more transparency as to what's going on there.  Meanwhile... Borrello says a special task force will hold its first meeting to analyze Brooks-TLC's plan for a new hospital and present a better plan.  Borrello says he, Assemblyman Andy Goodell... and, County Executive P-J Wendel were part of the effort to create the panel.  He says it's crucial that a plan is developed for the hospital that's financially sustainable.

City Council approves "Vision Zero" traffic safety policy...
The Jamestown City Council has approved a new highway design policy that says traffic fatalities are "preventable" versus "inevitable."  Lawmakers recently adopted the policy called "Vision Zero..." which began in places like Sweden in the mid 1990s as a new approach to dealing with traffic safety for motorists, pedestrians and bike riders.  Mayoral Assistant Zach Altschuler has been the point-man for the city on the effort... and, says the policy recognizes that people -- driver's aren't perfect -- so mistakes need to be considered when making decisions.  Altschuler presented the police to the Public Safety Committee... which then approved it to go before the full city council.  Council President Tony Dolce says traffic has been one of the biggest issues facing Jamestown because it's an older city... that began at a time when there was really no vehicular travel at all.  In addition to cars... he says motorcycles and bicycles are part of the equation.  Dolce says that's especially been the case around the neighborhood elementary and junior high schools.  He says they were built at a time where there wasn't as much vehicular traffic in those areas.

Jamestown man arrested for alleged stabbings at Wine Cellar...
A city man is free on $25,000 bail after allegedly slashing multiple people with a sharp object during a large fight outside the Wine Cellar bar in downtown Jamestown.  City police were called to the scene on North Main Street at closing time Saturday... 2 a.m.  On arrival... an officer spotted 23 year-old Codie DJ Swartz -- and began a foot pursuit with the man after being told that he had stabbed some of them.  After a brief chase... Swartz was taken into custody with no further incident.  Police say the victims suffered lacerations in the incident.  Swartz is charged with two counts of second-degree assault... tampering with physical evidence... fourth-degree criminal possession of a Weapon... and, second-degree obstructing governmental administration.  He was sent to the county jail where he posted bail.

Man from Ashville arrested for menacing with a baseball bat...
An Ashville man has been arrested for allegedly threatening another person with a baseball bat... and, damaging that person's property with it.  Sheriff's officers were called to 8248 Griswold Rd. 9:30 Sunday morning... and learned that 47 year-old Mason Riggle had threatened the person, and damaged their property.  Riggle was arrested for third-degree criminal mischief... and second-degree menacing... and, taken to the county jail for centralized arraignment.

Chautauqua Co. included with 21 total now under a NYS Drought Watch...
There are now 21 New York state counties -- including Chautauqua and Cattaraugus -- that are under a Drought Watch due to a lack of rain.  Governor Kathy Hochul late Friday directed the state Department of Environmental Conservation to issue a drought watch for those counties after consulting with the state Drought Management Task Force, and federal agencies.  The state is encouraging residents in affected counties -- especially those dependent on private groundwater wells -- to conserve water whenever possible during the coming weeks.  Hochul says "recent rains across the state were not enough to address the dry conditions that have persisted this year."  In addition to Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties... those in the drought watch area also include Allegany and Erie.  While few public water supply challenges have been reported due to dry conditions, below-normal precipitation during the last three months, low streamflows, and low groundwater levels prompted the need for action to ensure adequate public water supplies.

Borrello raising concern over upcoming meeting of Farm Laborers Wage Board...
Chautauqua County's two representatives on the state legislature are expressing concern over a meeting of the Farm Laborers Wage Board in early September.  The Board is expected to vote to advance their recommendations, and final report during the meeting set for Sept. 6.  Back in January... the board voted 2-1 to lower the threshold to 40 hours for farm laborers before overtime kicks in.  Borrello says if Governor Kathy Hochul and her administration accepts the recommendation, it would become the biggest challenge facing farmers.  He adds that Hochul has proposed a tax credit for those farmers... but, he says they've only created a "fund" in the budget with no details.  Labor unions and other organizations favor the move to lower the threshold to 40 hours, saying it would give migrant farmers workers a more fair wage.  But Borrello... who is the ranking member on the Senate's Agriculture Committee... has a different view.  Borrello says he and Assemblyman Andy Goodell have introduced legislation that would eliminate the Farm Laborers Wage Board.

Woman from Arkwright arrested for trepassing in weekend incident...
A woman from Arkwright is accused of trespassing inside a Center Road home in the town she was not allowed to be in.  Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene shortly after 2 p.m. last Saturday... and, found that 55 year-old Ida Weber Smith had entered, and remained unlawfully inside the home.  Smith was found, and taken into custody for second-degree criminal trespass... and, further investigation found that she had also violated an order of protection.  Smith was also charged with second-degree criminal contempt... and, taken to the county jail for arraignment.  She was issued appearance tickets for Arkwright Town Court.

77th Gerry Rodeo set to begin this Wednesday night...
The town of Gerry will again become "Rodeo City" this Wednesday when the 77th Gerry Rodeo gets underway at the rodeo grounds off Route 60.  The four-day event run goes through next Saturday, Aug. 6... with shows beginning each night at 8 p.m.  Rodeo Spokesman Paul Cooley says the rodeo's traditional beef barbecue dinners will also be served beginning at 5 p.m. each night.  If you've never had one before... Cooley says you need to try one.  He says they cook about 1,000 pounds of beef over an open fire each day, and serve it with potatoes and other sides, plus drinks.  The rodeo was one of the few events actually held last year, as the COVID-19 pandemic continued... and, that helped the Gerry event set some attendance and other records in 2021.  This year... Cooley says they're hoping to at least equal that success.  He says they'll also have about 20 vendors on hand... selling everything from cotton candy, to western wear and fried dough.  Cooley says they have a new, ladies event this year... cowgirls break-away roping... which has been added to the traditional timed barrel racing.  Proceeds support the Gerry Fire Department.  For more information... including tickets... go on-line to gerryrodeo.org... or call 985-4847.
