Langworthy rallies standing room only gathering in Lakewood...
With a week to go before Republican primary day for the new 23rd Congressional District... one of the two major candidates in the race was in Lakewood last night.  Cherry Creek native Nick Langworthy addressed a standing room only crowd at the Lakewood Memorial Post Veteran's Club.  Langworthy, who is also State GOP Chairman, called it the biggest turn-out he's had on the campaign... and was very much a "homecoming of sorts" for him because he has family in Chautauqua County.  He adds that he felt there were some good, thoughtful questions from the audience, who want to see a better direction "for this Congressional district."  Landgworthy spoke and answered a wide-range of questions for more than an hour.  Afterwards... he also addressed criticism from some Republicans that -- as state Party Chairman -- he shouldn't be running for Congress.  He says he has a great staff that's helping to run the party... and, he says his opponent is also running a business while he campaigns.  That opponent is Buffalo-area developer, Carl Paladino.


Two people suffer non-life threatening gun shot wounds in Sunday evening incident in Jamestown...
Two people were shot on Jamestown's northside during an alleged incident that occured about mid-evening Sunday.  City police were called to the scene at Winsor and Crossman Streets just after 9 p.m. for a reported gunshot being heard.  Officers say they found that  two people were shot... and, subsequently transported to receive medical treatment.  Both victims sustained non-lifethreatening injuries and are in stable condition.  Police say the investigation is ongoing and further information may be released as it becomes available.  Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the JPD Confidential Tip Line at 483-TIPs... that's 483-8477.


Wendel praises "ordinary Chautauquans," and first responders quick actions in Rushdie attack...
Chautauqua County's top-elected official is praising first responders, and "ordinary Chautauquans" for their quick actions and heroism in saving the life of author Salman Rushdie at the amphitheater last Friday.  Rushdie and interviewer Henry Reese were just taking the stage when 24 year-old Hadi Mater of New Jersey rushed onto the stage and stabbed Rushdie several times.  The attack also left Reese with a head injury.  During Sunday's press event at the Hall of Philosophy... County Executive P.J. Wendel says that's when Chautauquans jumped into action.  Wendel says the incident has drawn both national and international attention... and, has shaken Chautauqua Institution -- and the county -- "to the core."  He added that it's "disappointing that we live in a society where we cannot listen to the differences of others in a place like the institution." 


Man arrested in Jamestown following DWAI crash...
A man has been arrested on Jamestown's northside for allegedly driving while under the influence of drugs when he intentionally drove his car into the rear end of another vehicle.  City police were called to the scene at North Main and West 12th Streets about 7 a.m. last Saturday... and, their investigation showed that 46 year-old Amr Elmohandis had been speeding on purpose before hitting the back of the victim's car... causing danger to both the other driver and the public.  Elmohandis was arrested for second-degree assault, second-degree criminal mischief, first-degree reckless endangerment, and DWAI-Drugs.  He was held pending arraignment.


Cattaraugus County woman seriously hurt in motorcycle accident near Kennedy...
A West Valley woman suffered serious injuries when she lost control of her motorcycle... and, it crashed while trying to pass a farm tractor in the town of Ellington.  Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene on Waterboro Hill Road -- near Kennedy -- shortly before 4 p.m. last Saturday.  Officers say they found the bike... operated by 65 year-old Cherie Steff... had crashed to the ground.  Steff was taken by medivac helicopter to a regional hospital.  The Cattaraugus County woman is not charged. 


JCC official hoping to at least meet last year's Fall semester enrollment...
The fall semester at Jamestown Community College will begin next Monday... and, while the school is still dealing with COVID-19 enrollment declines, Vice-President of Student Affairs, Kirk Young, says he's optimistic they can meet… and perhaps exceed… last year’s totals.  Young says they are ahead of last year numbers for new students.  However, he says they are struggling is in bringing back students that were there last year.  Dr. Young says JCC’s efforts to reverse a long term decline in students had just begun to bear fruit when the pandemic started.  Thanks to COVID relief dollars, the college will NOT be cutting any positions this fall.  But... Young is quick to add that those COVID funds "won't be there forever."  He adds they are working to recruit as many freshmen as possible from the shrinking number of high school graduates in the area. 


Gasoline prices continue downward trend in Jamestown-area...
The cost of a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline in the Jamestown-area has fallen 8-cents more over the past week... continuing a trend seen the past several weeks.  The AAA East Central Gas Price Reports says the price is now just under $4.45 a gallon... down from just over $4.52 last week.  However... that's still 77-cents more than a year ago.  AAA says it's finding that drivers are making significant changes to cope with high pump prices.  In a recent survey, almost two-thirds of U.S. adults have changed their driving habits or lifestyle since March.  The national average for a gallon of regular gas fell 10 cents in the past week to $3.95.
